Jesus Needs a Background Check

Last updated on: October 17, 2011 at 4:34 am   By Christian Piatt

As I pulled in to church this morning I saw the sign in this photo across the street in an empty lot. I’m guessing I don’t have to explain why this creeped me out, but just in case… Who offers free child care? Why are they motivated to do this? Are they a cult? Pedophiles? Some fringe culture church that can’t see past the weirdness of their offer because of their ideological fanaticism? Spray paint? Really? No name, no affiliations... Read more

The Power of Poo

Last updated on: October 13, 2011 at 9:07 pm   By Christian Piatt

The first step in my journey to recovery is to admit I am powerless over my daughter’s bowel movements. Zoe is coming up on three years old, which means, among other things, that she is discovering creative ways (infuriating for her parents) to assert her power an autonomy. There are the theatrical moment where she prostrates herself across the kitchen floor because I didn’t let her choose her own gummy vitamin from the bottle, as well as fuming mini-rages whenever... Read more

Wrestling With Ethical Food Choices

Last updated on: October 12, 2011 at 7:28 pm   By Christian Piatt

I’ve always been a fan of the philosophy that if God had meant for humans not to eat meat, it wouldn’t taste so delicious. Mostly I like that perspective because I’ve grown up eating some kind of meat my entire life. But lately I’ve started to wonder if there’s a Biblical basis for vegetarianism. In my more conservative Christian days, I hard all kinds of justification for the exploitation of the world’s resources as we see fit based on the... Read more

Anwar Al-Awlaki: Eye For an Eye, Or a Third Way?

Last updated on: October 11, 2011 at 8:34 pm   By Christian Piatt

(Originally published in the Huffington Post) I’ve been reflecting on the recent killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, an Al Qaida leader operating from Yemen, by American forces. A friend asked me if the fact that al-Awlaki was American-born had any impact on how I felt about his death. Those who have followed the story likely realize that this assassination is big news, not just because of his prominence in Al Qaida, but also because it’s the first time United States forces... Read more

From Prosperity Gospel to Disparity Gospel?

Last updated on: October 10, 2011 at 6:04 pm   By Christian Piatt

I’m not going to spend too much time or energy expressing my disdain for Prosperity Gospel, the kind of ministry by the likes of Joel Osteen that preaches about how Jesus wants you to be rich. Actually, it’s more about drawing a correlation between your material success and your faithfulness, but whatever you call it, it’s still crap. The biggest issues I have with such theology are two-fold. First, it suggests to the poor that there’s something inherently wrong with... Read more

Sex is Dirty; Save It for Marriage

Last updated on: October 8, 2011 at 4:59 pm   By Christian Piatt

Three generations of women in my family left the house this morning for a women’s tea at church. My wife, Amy, and a few other women started this monthly tradition a while back at Milagro (the congregation we founded in our house seven years ago) when we realized we had a number of young girls who were struggling to define for themselves what it means to be a woman. So they started getting together, putting questions anonymously in a hat... Read more

Fatherhood in my forties: WTF?

Last updated on: October 7, 2011 at 4:57 pm   By Christian Piatt

I’m officially over and done with my thirties. I’m also “surgically sure” I’m done having kids. But with a second-grader and a two-year-old in the house, I’m far from an emancipated empty-nester. By the time my mom was forty, I was driving. Yet here I am, wiping butts and noses. My hope is that I’ll be done wiping the current generation’s orifices before the latter requires any assistance. It’s weird to think of having kids around the house until I’m... Read more

Living Into a New Story

Last updated on: October 6, 2011 at 9:02 pm   By Christian Piatt

My wife, Amy, and I just got back from a quick trip to Las Vegas for my 40th birthday. I jumped off a 109-story building, we did the zip line down Freemont Street, watched a couple of shows, ate too much food…is was fantastic. Trips to Vegas these days are different for us than they might have been when we were younger. In some ways, the pressure is off to live up to expectations of peers to be wild, stay... Read more

If your friend jumped off a building…

Last updated on: October 5, 2011 at 7:19 pm   By Christian Piatt

As I wrote about earlier, I’m working through a few issues around turning forty. So in true midlife crisis fashion, I jumped 855 feet off a 109 story building. My friend, Steve, talked me into jumping off the Stratosphere in Vegas with him. So I guess we now know the answer to the age old question: “If your friend jumped off a building, would you do it too?” Read more

Considering the options, I’ll take suffering

Last updated on: October 2, 2011 at 3:33 am   By Christian Piatt

I write this knowing well that someone older than I am likely will post some snarky comment about how I know nothing about aging. But it’s on my mind and this is my blog…so there. I turn forty this week. For the most part, I think it’s great. I love my life, my family, and we’re in a good place, all things considered. But I went to see my doctor this week for a long-overdue checkup. And it turns out... Read more
