20 Ice Breaker Questions For Small Groups 2016-06-28T08:08:35-05:00 Jack Wellman

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Here are 20 icebreaker questions for small groups.

Breaking the Ice

The phrase,” breaking the ice” or “ice breakers” is like getting through the outer surface level to find out what’s below or inside a person. We can open up the conversation by asking a series of questions where the small group can get to know one another on a much more intimate level. This allows us to let our guards down and be more transparent with each other, so breaking the ice can move the conversation into areas where we’re more transparent with one another in order to get to know others in a small group. Here are 20 icebreakers that you can use to open up the group to one another so that not only can they know one another better, they can begin to grow more comfortable with the group. This allows for more growth among the body of believers and may allow others to draw closer to one another.

My Name Is…

First things first! Everyone should be allowed to introduce themselves and tell a bit about their background in order to see where they’re coming from and why they have certain characteristics. The more we know each other, the better we can relate to one another.

What would you give Up?

If you had to lose one of three senses, like seeing, hearing, or speaking, which could you do without? Would you rather give up your sight, hearing, or speaking? Why?

On a Desert Island

If you were stranded on a desert island, what one book, besides the Bible, would you like to have? Why that book and not another? If you had a choice, who would you like to be stranded on a desert island with and why?

Today’s the Last Day

What if you knew this was your last day on earth? What would you do? What would your priority be?

Iron-sharpens-iron-and

Changing One Thing

If you could change one of your attributes or characteristics about yourself, what would that be? Why would you change this one thing and not others?

Redo the Past

If you could, what one thing would you go back in time and redo or not do again? Why is this “one thing” so important?

What is your Favorite Hobby?

You could ask each member what their favorite hobby is and why? What drew them to being interested in it?

Revisiting History

If you could go back in time, who, besides Jesus Christ, would you like to visit and why? What time period of history intrigues you most?

Where would you Live?

If you could choose any place in the world to live, where would that be? Why would it be so interesting for you?

A Book or Movie

Ask the group to answer one by one the question of, “What is your favorite movie or book outside of the Bible? What was the greatest impact it left on your life?

Favorite Bible Book or Verse

Ask the group what is their favorite book in the Bible or what Bible verses have left the greatest impact on your life? Why?

What Gift do you think you have?

What is the gift(s) that you clearly know you have from the Holy Spirit? How can your gift(s) help the church?

The Hardest Thing

Ask the group what was the hardest thing they ever had to do in life? Why was it so hard?

What Question for Jesus?

If you could ask Jesus just one question in person, what would that question be?

What would you do with a lot of Money?

Most of will never be able to answer this question but ask the group if they received a vast sum of money, what would you do with it?

Greatest Desire

If you didn’t have to earn a living, what would be the thing you would most want to do, even if you weren’t paid to do it?

Change Yourself

If you were allowed to change one thing about your personality or character, what would that one thing be and why?

What Physical Characteristic would you Change?

If you could change one physical attribute about yourself, what would that be? What physical thing would you like to change the most regarding your body?

What is your Greatest Regret?

Everyone has regrets in life so ask the group, what it was in life that they regret the most and why?

Why are you Here?

Ask the members of the group why they wanted to be in this small group but also, what do they think God created them for? What is their purpose in the church?

Conclusion

I hope these icebreakers can help break down walls and draw the group closer together in order that they might grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord our God and to be more unified in purpose, mind, body, soul, and spirit. We need one another because as wise King Solomon said, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” (Prov 27:17).
