Here’s how a Christian husband might pray for his Christian wife.
Pray for Protection
Husbands, if you love your wife as Christ loved the church, then you’ll be praying for her often because Jesus was a Man of prayer, one night staying all night up a mountain in prayer (Luke 6:12). He was probably alone and cold from the chilly Judean nights in the mountains, so this was no retreat for Jesus. This was hard work. He had good reason to pray all night because “At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles” (Luke 6:13) so He showed the critical importance of prayer in such an important matter as choosing the twelve disciples. Prayer may come easy for some, but for many of us it’s a literal “War Room.” We know we’re fighting against wicked spirits in high places, but with our weapon and armor we’re equipped for the spiritual warfare that is already here upon us (Eph 6:10-17), therefore we must be “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints” (Eph 6:18). If we’re praying for the saints, how much more should a husband pray for his Christian wife?
Pray for Strength
If a Christian husband’s wife is also a mother, then she will need your help, but most of all she will need God’s strength. The husband’s not always going to be there to help her. She works like her husband does, so pray for her strength during the day for all that she has to do. A job cut in half is a lot easier than one whole for another. There will be times that she will be just about exhausted and emotionally drained so plan on taking a weekly break from everything and enter the “No Work” zone for a date night. We go out on Friday night for a pizza buffet. There are things that you can surprise her with so pray for God to lead you to do something that would mean a lot to her. That is loving her as Christ loved the church, and died for her, so husbands, die to yourself and pray that your labor of love in prayer on her behalf will let her know that you’re praying for God to strengthen her. That’s probably what she’s been praying for already.
Pray for a Blessing
Just praise God for your godly wife, if you’re a Christian husband. Thank God for her and tell Him how grateful you are to Him for her. Then ask God to pour out a blessing on her day today, whatever that ends up looking like. It could be a friend’s encouragement, it could be a “Thank You” from a co-worker, or it could be a note you stuck in her purse that she finds at lunchtime where you’ve written “I you love. Praying your day goes better.” Whatever you do, do pray for her and ask God to bless her. A small note of appreciation or verbal communication can make a huge impact, so pray for this woman’s life today.
Prayer for a Parent
If the Christian woman is a mother, as I wrote before, pray for her but also that she might be a godly model for her children, just as the father should, and that she would have the wisdom to make choices under pressure and time constraints, and that things might go well with the children and that they might have respect for their mother. The father’s part of that is to be in agreement with their mother and when the children see the father and the mother in total agreement on certain issues (e.g. house rules), the children will know their limitations, no matter who’s at home. If parent’s expectations are clear from the beginning, they should also know what’s expected of them in public. Every mother is juggling home, family, job, and spouse so being part of the solution is being a blessing to others…and certainly to the Christian husband’s wife. The Prophet Amos wrote that if two walk together, they must be in agreement (Amos 3:3). Husbands, walk in agreement as much as possible and support your wife’s decisions regarding your children like if “mom said no, its no.” That is answer to her prayer.
Conclusion
In the Prophet Samuel’s farewell speech, he said, “Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way” (1st Sam 12:23). In essence, Samuel was saying that it would be sin for him if he failed to pray for the nation Israel. They did need prayers too because even from their own lips they said “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king” (1st Sam 12:19). Samuel didn’t disagree with their prognosis and actually agreed that they were fully bent on evil (1st Sam 12:20-21) but it wasn’t just their wanting a king that was the problem. Thankfully Samuel wasn’t finished speaking and so he said, “For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own” (1st Sam 12:22), so if God had mercy on an evil and idolatrous nation and commanded Samuel to pray for them, the Christian husband is even more responsible for praying for his Christian wife. We can use as much prayer as we can get.
