Here are 7 encouraging Bible verses intended for the stay-at-home moms.
Proverbs 31:1-2 “The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him: What are you doing, my son? What are you doing, son of my womb? What are you doing, son of my vows.”
There is no King Lemuel in the historical or biblical records so this may have been an example of what godly mothers can teach to their children. The word “Lemeul” means “for God” so this instruction from Solomon’s mother may have been what the author meant by writing that which “his mother taught him” which included avoiding strong drink (31:4-6) and to “judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy” (31:9). Mothers have such a powerful impact on the life of the child that the impressions last a lifetime. Mother’s generally make the best teachers of young children.
Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
The sad fact is that a child that is not trained from an early age will have more behavioral problems in school and society than one that is. That’s why this proverb says that “even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Training a child with loving discipline lasts a lifetime. This doesn’t guarantee every child will “not depart from it” but will make it more likely.
First Timothy 5:2 Regard “older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.”
Mothers who choose to stay at home might be able to help “younger women as sisters” if they are new mothers. There are some things that books cannot teach you that experience can. Raising children are one of those things where experience helps. The stay-at-home mom has more experience with raising children because of the proportion of time they spend with their children.
Titus 2:4-5 “That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children.”
This is similar to 1st Timothy 5:2 but this includes more than just helping them as mothers; it includes how to love their husbands and their children and being sober (minded) and working together with the husband and father in the familial responsibilities.
Ruth 1:16 “But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.”
The Book of Ruth is one of the most touching historical accounts in the Bible. Ruth leaves her own people and binds herself with her mother-in-law Naomi. This story was about the loyalty of a daughter-in-law, Ruth, who despite her losing her husband and forsaking all her family and people, went to a foreign land and became part of the lineage of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
If you’re a stay-at-home mom, you can use the encouragement of this verse. We cannot do anything of lasting or eternal value in our own strength but through Christ, all things, because He “strengthens me” and you.
Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”
The best way you can help your children honor you is to honor their grandparents. By obeying the fourth commandment, you model for them the normalcy of showing respect to parents and not speaking negatively behind their back. This is the very first commandment with a promise; one of a longer life if obeyed. If you want your children to honor you, then honor their grandma and grandpa, whether they are alive or not because you can still dishonor or honor parents after they’re in the grave.
Conclusion
Stay-at-home mothers deserve a lot of respect. They have a desire to stay at home because they want to teach, train, and love their children on a more personal level. This allows mothers to spend more time with their children and that means having a greater involvement with their children. Those mothers who cannot afford to stay at home and particularly, single mothers, have the hardest job on earth, in my humble opinion, but all mothers, stay-at-home or not deserve our respect and admiration.
