Living for God will not necessarily make you popular. In fact, you may feel less and less accepted in this life, the more you begin to live for the next. Choosing to give your heart to Jesus means opening yourself up to an entirely new way of thinking, feeling, and seeing. But it also means opening yourself up to complete acceptance and unconditional love. It may be hard to fathom at first, but God sees you, knows you, and wants you. The verses below remind us that in Him, we find our place. We just have to be willing to accept.
Romans 15:7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
We must take care to remember that Christ sees us at our best, as well as our very worst, and still accepts us completely. When we are free from judgment, how can we then be quick to judge others? If we choose to love and accept one another in our imperfection, we echo the example Jesus has set, and God gets the praise.
1 Timothy 1:15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst
It can be so hard to believe that Jesus came to save little old me. It can be equally hard to believe that I am as much a sinner as those who put Him to death. I must accept both as truth before I can grow into the person I was created by God to be and before I can believe in his promise of grace.
Psalm 139:14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well
When we look in the mirror we often see our flaws. We consider some of ourselves to be worthy, and other parts much less desirable. But the bible says that we are made complete, and perfectly, from the very beginning. Before we are even born, we were accepted and loved forever.
Ephesians 1:3-6 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will – to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.”
God knew long before the earth was created, that he would love us through every sin, every disappointment, every time we broke his heart. Yet he called us holy. He set us apart as his own children. Then he blessed us abundantly and overwhelmingly. We are not just accepted…we are cherished.
Colossians 1:21-22 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation
Oftentimes when we find ourselves feeling alienated or distanced from God, we tell ourselves it’s because he is not there, or that we are not important to him. But upon careful examination, it becomes clear that we are the ones who turned away. God never does. We make choices that either bring us into a deeper relationship with him, or we step back and away because we do not want to be examined or challenged. The Lord recognizes this struggle. He made a way for us to be welcomed, even while in our poor behavior or time away, through Christ’s death on the cross. That single act sets us back into God’s presence and reunites us with holiness.
John 6:37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.
Relationships can be so fickle. A passionate love between two people can quickly turn sour. A great friendship torn apart by jealousy. A family breaks over differences of opinion or lifestyles. It can begin to feel as if we are all teetering on the edge of rejection by those we love. Jesus said that will never happen in his family. John 6:37 says that Christ honors his father by loving his children unconditionally. He welcomes us and invites us to stay- for always.
Genesis 4:7 “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”
Mastering all sin is not a requirement to being loved by God. He recognizes that we will struggle and fall, sometimes over and over again. What he invites us to do though, is walk with him, see his ways, and grow as children into the mature versions of our Christ-centered selves. Sin will always be lurking right outside our door, but we have all power to take control over it through a constant and steady relationship with the Lord.
Final Thoughts
We all want to feel accepted. The desire to fit in somewhere lies within all of us. We try on different identities, seek out different places, and search for our best fit. But if we listen close enough, we will hear a voice inside that tells us that we don’t belong here, because we are not from here. We belong with God, and until we seek our acceptance from Him, we will always feel just a little bit like an outsider. The bible verses above speak to our desire to find our place in this world, and God’s constant reminder that we cannot do so until we know that our place is with Him.
