Many Christian couples that are about to be wedded opt in to some type of premarital counseling program, often within the church that they attend or with a trusted married couple. It’s a great idea and can really help the couple explore questions and situations that they didn’t even think of: how to spend money, where to go on holidays, how many kids are wanted, budgeting, etc. All those topics, and much more is typically covered in premarital sessions. Of course, the Bible (in a solid church) is the foundation of the counseling and should be examined and studied as a part of preparing for the upcoming wedding. However, this studying of Scripture should not stop at premarital counseling. Just because a couple finished the premarital phase does not mean they should cease studying the Bible together. To get started, here are the top 7 Bible verses for Newlyweds to study.
“Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” Hebrews 13:4
Marriage certainly is honorable; it helps mold character and forge stronger resolves. Both parties, ideally, are dying to themselves and thinking of the other person rather than their own needs and wants. It’s difficult, but definitely rewarding.
“Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.” 1 Corinthians 7:3-4
This is certainly an important passage for Newlyweds to study. Although many couples may be in marital bliss during this time, difficulties will arise and its important to remember that neither spouse has autonomy anymore. In fact, there very bodies are the spouse’s. It may seem odd, but that’s really how a good marital relationship works. Once one starts neglecting the other, sexually or otherwise, that’s when more problems emerge.
“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is the head of the church ; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.” Ephesians 5:22-25
Contrary to popular opinion, this passage does not tell women to be doormats that can be trampled upon. For proof, just look at what the husbands are to do: “love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.” That is a tall order, and it means that the husband has to be sacrificing himself daily.
“ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:27-28
What better passage to study as newlyweds than the story of God creating Adam and Eve, the first marriage in the Bible?

“Better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, than in a house shared with a contentious woman” Proverbs 21:9
Contentious people are hard to be around, and even though it’s a stereotype for women to be nagging their husbands about everything, guys aren’t off the hook. The Proverbs deal with generalities—and this can easily be applied to men, too.
“Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife in from the Lord.” Proverbs 19:14
I can definitely attest to this one! My wife is truly a gift from God and she makes me a better man.
1 Corinthians 13
It’s almost become a cliché’, but this chapter is important in understanding the characteristics of love. It’s a must study chapter for newlyweds who are striving to be patient, kind, etc. in the way they treat their spouse.
Conclusion
These may be specific Bible verses that are geared towards married people, but the fact is the entirety of Scripture should be studied. Newlyweds can certainly start out by studying distinct Bible passages, but I strongly recommend going through the Scriptures individually as well. When all is said and done, reading the Bible helps mold us into godly people, which is certainly a big part in marriage!
