Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
God uses us at all ages. Though some do not come to know him until later in life, there are others who feel the burning desire to know Him from adolescence. The Bible is filled with young, faithful believers who stepped out, despite their age, into a grand adventure with God. The Lord used them, not because of their age, but because of their hearts. To know Him from an early age is to spend your life walking with him, learning from Him, and getting to know Him. A relationship like that will never get old.
Ezekiel 16:60 Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.
Once God grabs ahold of you, He doesn’t let go. He is the same God in our early years as our late. He doesn’t forget you or forsake you and his love never grows old.
1 Timothy 4:12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity
At every age, believers can inspire others. How impactful a young Christian could be to others, during a stage in their lives when the pressure is so great to conform. At a time in life when it seems the most important thing is fitting in, there is bravery in deciding to standout by setting an example of what a relationship with Jesus looks like.
Ecclesiastes 12:1 Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”
We will all grow old one day, should we be lucky enough to do so. There may come a time when we cannot do or go as we once did. This is why a solid foundation of faith, and trust in God, is so important. Should we build it while we’re young, it will remain standing into our older years, and we will still then take great pleasure in days spent with the Lord.
2 Timothy 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
This verse speaks to the need to step away from the immature, selfish desires of our youth and journey, instead, towards a life of faith and love. We must seek these things- chase after them-while we are young enough to do so. There is so much adventure to be had when we pursue the things the Lord asks of us.
Jeremiah 1:7-9 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord
I love the tenderness of Jeremiah 1:7-9. The Lord knows that this man has doubts about his ability to carry out Gods plan at such a young age. He supersedes those doubts by assuring him that there is no reason to fear, as the Lord will be his protector the entire way.
Proverbs 22:6 Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
As a parent, I do my very best to teach my children to follow God and love him with all their hearts, mind, and souls. I believe that raising them to know the Lord, as a constant source of love in their lives, will offer them protection as they grow older. They may ask questions, or have bouts of worry or fear, but they will not turn away from the security that comes from knowing God. They will know the way they should go is always back to Him.
Psalm 71:5 For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth
One of the greatest gifts that God gave his children was the gift of hope. During the hardest trials of life, we can sustain hope, no matter how small, that the Lord will work for ultimate good. There is a confidence, a constant rumbling, that comes from remembering all of the ways He has worked in our lives, from a young age all the way up until now. He is our hope, and will continue to be, until we can no longer call ourselves young.
Conclusion
Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven belonged to the children. He knew that their faith was strong, because their hearts had not yet been damaged by a fallen world. The gift that young people most beautifully bring to the table, is that they have a view of the world that is open and receptive. That is exactly the way Jesus wants our hearts to be. Open to following His plans for our lives, and receptive to His presence and unending love. Living this way ensures that we all remain young at heart. May your relationship with Him always be youthful.
