Are there places in the Bible where we can turn to find help in times of trouble? Yes, more than we could possibly include in one article.

Bible Verses for Help

There are no exceptions; we all need help at one time or another and God is more than willing and He is certainly able. It’s not so much a matter of where to find these “help verses” as much as it is a matter of Who will help you and that is the mighty God, so here are some Bible verses with application on where to find help in the Bible.

Psalm 54:4 “Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.”

God not only is our help in times of need, He is the upholder of our life…our physical life at times when He supernaturally intervenes but also the source of eternal life in Jesus Christ (John 3:16).

Psalm 63:7-8 “You have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.”

Once more the idea of God upholding us is mentioned and it is by the strong hand, His right hand, which is symbolic of strength and sovereignty. The psalmist speaks of God’s help in the past tense (“you have been my help”) and in the present (“in the shadow of your wings”).

Deuteronomy 33:26 “There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help, through the skies in his majesty.”

When you need help, there is no one, no human, no other source on earth, like God. This verse is so vivid in describing God speeding His help by riding “through the heavens to” our help and “through the skies in his majesty.” What an awesome image of our God and His eagerness to help us when we need it.

Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

God is an ever-present help in times of trouble and the way the psalmist puts it, a very present or an always-present help in times of trouble. God is our source of strength and our place of refuge.

Hebrews 2:16 “For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”

Every one of us is tempted to sin and in our weakness, we often cave in. Try this the next time you’re tempted; cry out to Him for strength to resist the temptation because we confidently know that “he is able to help those who are being tempted” because He knows what that feels like.

Mark 9:24 “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

When Jesus was asked to help a man’s child, the man said he believed but apparently his belief wavered. Has your belief in Jesus ever wavered? If so, pray “Lord, help my unbelief” and He will answer that cry for help too.

Philippians 4:16 “Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again.”

Here is a case where Paul had apparently asked the church at Philippi to help and they came through so we might learn from this that it’s perfectly fine to ask the help of our brothers and sisters in Christ when we need it. If we don’t ask, others cannot help, just as if we don’t ask God, we don’t receive (James 4:2).

Matthew 14:30 “But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”

Peter was able to actually walk on water for a time, as long as he kept his eyes fixed upon Jesus. The moment he took his eyes off of Jesus, he started to sink and cried out to help. Jesus didn’t hesitate so “immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt” (Matt 14:31)?

Deuteronomy 33:29 “Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord, the shield of your help, and the sword of your triumph! Your enemies shall come fawning to you, and you shall tread upon their backs.”

This ought to make us happy to have a God such as our God Who is a shield to defend us and like a sword to fight for us. God alone can make claim to such a promise.

Hebrews 4:16 “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Did you know that if you have repented of your sins and trusted in Christ, then you can approach the throne of grace with confidence…you can draw near to the throne of God and find mercy and grace in your great time of need for help. That is a promise to every child of God.

Conclusion

Jesus said we should “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matt 7:7) just like in the example of the Persistent Widow that Jesus spoke about in Luke 18:1-8. This might mean we need to keep on asking until we find help; we need to keep seeking until we find help; and we need to keep on knocking until God opens the way for us to receive His help. When you are in a place and time where you need help, cry out to God and find your way specifically to the Book of Psalms. This book goes into great detail of different circumstances where the psalmist, just like us, needs help and the lesson is that God is always there when we need Him, He is there at the time we need Him, and He will be there in the future when we need Him, just as He has been in the past to give us the help when we need it. It’s not a matter of if we’ll need help but a matter of when, but God is faithful and is an ever-present help any time you need Him.
