Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
There are moments in life when it’s time to sit still. Moments when God calls us to stand where we are, not because it’s the ‘safe” place, but because there is a lesson to be learned in the quiet. But there are also times, of equal importance, when the Lord tells us to get to running, to pick up speed, and prepare to jump. In those moments, when being called to step out in faith, we can take heart by remembering that we are not the first who’ve been asked to do so. We can look to the examples of so many in the bible, and be assured that, while the way was never smooth, those risk takers who trusted in the Lord were always stronger for having taken the bumpy road. Please read on for some verses of guidance and assurance should you be about to set out on that same road. And please remember, you are never traveling alone.
Matthew 14:30-31 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?
Peter took a huge risk by stepping out into the water. If he was wrong about who this man was, he could quickly find himself at the bottom of the sea. But His eyes were set upon the true Lord, and his heart told Him to follow. It was only when he looked away that He began to doubt. Sometimes the things around us say one thing, and God says another. If you feel you are being called to take a chance, its important to listen to the right voice, and like Peter, step out only when you are sure its God you’re walking towards.
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Knowing that you are God’s child, that He’s in your corner, that he cheers you on….that’s enough to take on anything in this world that could ever stand in your way.
Ephesians 5:15–17 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
We all have one life to live, and sometimes it can be tempting to take on everyone and everything under the sun. We want to feel like we are busy for God. But He does not call us to be busy. He calls us to be wise. That wisdom comes from listening to His voice before taking on things that were not meant for us. It’s important to do God’s work, but far more important to do the work He has chosen for you.
Proverbs 11:14 For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.
I believe this verse speaks to the importance of surrounding yourself with wise counsel. As Christians, we are called to community. From that community, we find relationships that build us up and encourage us to be who we were made to be. When you surround yourself with others who will speak truth and love into your life, you can be assured that they will support you in taking chances for God.
James 4:14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
Our time here on earth is fleeting and no one knows their last day. We should live a life worthy of standing before Him at the end of it. Taking risks for God and living a life of obedience to his calling will guarantee that we do not waste the finite amount of time we have.
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
God’s Plans for us are so much bigger and better than we can imagine. Sometimes those plans involve things that make our stomachs flip. But we can rest assure that if we are following His plan, there is nothing to fear. Our hope is in Him, and that guarantees our safety.
Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
This is it. This is what we remember when we want to take a risk so big it seems impossible. We remember that we serve a mighty God, through whom all things are possible. We step out in faith, and trust, not in this world, but in the One who made it. He can do anything.
Final Thoughts
If today is the day you decide to take a chance, I urge you to take a moment to review these scriptures. Take them to God and ask Him to show you how they apply to His plan for your life. Should you then feel as if you are, indeed being called to jump, you can rest assured that you will land safe and sound. Go get em’ risk-taker.

I am a married to my best friend, the proud Momma of the world’s coolest kiddos, and so in love with God that it brings me to my knees. I don’t always understand Him, sometimes argue with Him, but am eternally grateful to have been saved by Him. I have a blog called A Nap and A Prayer where I blog about my adventures as a God Girl and Stay at Home Mama. My favorite song lyric is from the song, Travelin Thru’ by Dolly Parton- “Sweet Jesus if you’re listening keep me ever close to you, as I’m tumbling, stumbling, travelin through.” Would love to travel together so we all make it Home in the end.
