Pride is an important topic discussed in the Bible. It is a sin that the Lord despises and the Bible even said God opposes the proud. Here is a list of verses and quotes on the topic of pride to help in a devotional, self study or to be used in a sermon.
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom. –Proverbs 11:2
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6
Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Philippians 2:3
God sends no one away empty except those who are full of themselves. – Dwight L. Moody
Pride is at the bottom of a great many errors and corruptions, and even of many evil practices, which have a great show and appearance of humility. – Matthew Henry
Most of the trouble in the world is caused by people wanting to be important.- T.S. Eliot
If I had only one sermon to preach it would be a sermon against pride.-Gilbert Keith Chesterton
A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you’re looking down, you can’t see something that’s above you. – C.S. Lewis
For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.- 1 John 2:16
The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. -Proverbs 8:13
It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels. –Augustine
I have had more trouble with myself than with any other man. – D.L. Moody
The way we respond to criticism pretty much depends on the way we respond to praise. If praise humbles us, then criticism will build us up. But if praise inflates us, then criticism will crush us; and both responses lead to our defeat. –Warren Wiersbe
No one enjoys feeling weak, whether it is emotionally, spiritually or physically. There is something within the human spirit that wants to resist the thought of weakness. Many times this is nothing more than our human pride at work. Just as weakness carries a great potential for strength, pride carries an equally great potential for defeat. –Charles Stanley
Pride comes from not knowing yourself and the world. The older you grow, and the more you see, the less reason you will find for being proud. Ignorance and inexperience are the pedestal of pride; once the pedestal is removed – pride will soon come down. –J.C. Ryle
In our proud love affair with ourselves we pour contempt, whether we know it or not, on the worth of God’s glory. As our pride pours contempt upon God’s glory, His righteousness obliges Him to pour wrath upon our pride. –John Piper
Do not be taken in or flattered by your own success or fame. Take not only as to whether or not the old creation, including everything which comes by birth, has gone through the cross. – Watchman Nee
A proud man is seldom a grateful man, for he never thinks he gets as much as he deserves. –Henry Ward Beecher
Whatever makes us feel superior to other people, whatever tempts us to convey a sense of superiority, that is the gravity of our sinful nature, not grace. –Philip Yancey
Pride builds walls between people, humility builds bridges. – Rick Warren
