Mad Men Recap 6.8 & 9: What Holds People Together, A Wellspring of Confidence

Last updated on: May 28, 2013 at 2:54 pm   By Nick Olson

Mad Men Recap 6.8: What Holds People Together This season of Mad Men’s eighth episode, titled “The Crash,” begins with Ken Cosgrove crashing a joy ride full of gallivanting middle-aged executives, but, emphasized by a jump-cut to a tall silhouetted figure smoking a cigarette outside of his former mistress’s apartment, it’s clearly Don Draper who is crashing. What Ken’s speeding car crash and Don’s post-mistress anxiety transition into is an office on “medicinal” speed. Trying to get a pick-me-up for... Read more

ELSEWHERE: Peter Molyneux Turns One Lucky Gamer Into A “Digital God”

Last updated on: May 28, 2013 at 10:42 am   By Jason Morehead

Last November, famed game designer Peter Molyneux launched Curiosity, a game in which millions of players tapped away at a giant cube in hopes of learning the secret at its center. (It made our editor-in-chief kinda mad) One lucky gamer recently removed the last bit of the cube. His reward? He will become an all-powerful god ruling over all of the other players in Molyneux’s next game, Godus, and will work with Molyneux to set Godus‘ morals and rules. Read more

CaPC Playlist: Deafheaven, Sigur Ros, The National, Brooke Waggoner, and A$AP Ferg

Last updated on: May 28, 2013 at 8:11 am   By Matthew Linder

Brief thoughts on songs that are on CaPC writers’ playlists. You can check out this week’s playlist on Spotify here. “Dream House” —Deafheaven “Dream House” is nine minutes of sizzling colorful sparkle and robust compact guitars that drown out the almost inaudible screams of the vocalist. The poetic lyrics are as impenetrable as the guitars as they discuss the inseparable intermarriage of love and death. Hindered by sober restlessness. Submitting to the amber crutch. The theme in my aching prose. Fantasizing... Read more

ELSEWHERE: Fort Hood Shooter Court Martial Finally Begins

Last updated on: May 28, 2013 at 8:47 am   By S. L. Whitesell

Where were you on November 5, 2009? I was near Tal Afar, Iraq, sitting down to eat in the dining facility, when I saw news of the shooting at Fort Hood. The world was upside down – here I was, safely deployed to a combat zone, watching my colleagues shot and killed at our home station. After years of delays (during which the shooter made hundreds of thousands of dollars), Major Nidal Hasan’s court martial will finally begin on June... Read more

ELSEWHERE: Is Human Cloning on Its Way?

Last updated on: May 24, 2013 at 7:30 am   By Christopher Hutton

Cloning is a process we’ve been able to do for many years with many species, including Dolly the sheep. However, the first step toward human cloning just occurred, where scientists caused a stem cell to return back into its embryonic state. Time Magazine reports. What will this mean for human ethics and our understanding of life? Only time will tell. Read more

ELSEWHERE: Porn—I Guess It’s Not that Victimless

Last updated on: May 24, 2013 at 7:28 am   By Derek Rishmawy

Apart from issues of fidelity and moral desensitization, consumption of pornography is oftentimes defended as an essentially victimless foible. Marney McCall helpfully exposes that myth in a recent article over at Relevant. It turns out that pornography and sex-trafficking have a closer link than most porn-consumers and producers would like to admit. Read more
