ELSEWHERE: Love and Marriage: Two Things We Don’t Understand

Last updated on: June 24, 2013 at 7:57 am   By S. L. Whitesell

Elizabeth Scalia, a very conservative Catholic writer, tells of finding out from a third party that a male Catholic friend was marrying another man. An anonymous reader implied she would have to shun him to be consistent. Scalia forcefully pares back the layers of confusion inherent in our culture’s sentimentality. The result is a short, beautiful contemplation that unexpectedly showed me a glimpse into the tender heart of the Holy Trinity. Read more

Football Season Changed Forever as Men’s Warehouse Fires George Zimmer

Last updated on: June 24, 2013 at 9:45 am   By Jeff Cavanaugh

“You’re gonna like the way you look. I guarantee it.” Anyone who has watched sports on TV in the past 25 years can hear Men’s Wearhouse founder George Zimmer pitching his company’s suits in his distinctive, gravelly baritone. Men’s Wearhouse, one of the largest men’s specialty clothing stores in the country, has been a fixture of the menswear market for decades, and Zimmer has been the face of the company the whole time. He has built Men’s Wearhouse an image of... Read more

What’s Up With The Mindy Project’s Sexy Christian Minister?

Last updated on: June 24, 2013 at 9:24 am   By Guest Contributor

By M. Joshua Cauller The Mindy Project has broken more than a few stereotypes in its single season, but none quite so intriguing as the character introduced in the episode, “My Cool Christian Boyfriend“ (episode 19). Titular Mindy (Mindy Kaling) objects when a tall blond fellow (Anders Holm) blocks her from exiting a New York subway car with his massive cargo. Her protest leads to his flirtation. He reveals that he’s transporting bikes for kids in Haiti and that he’s... Read more

When Corporations Repent: Accepting Xbox’s Mea Culpa

Last updated on: June 24, 2013 at 6:58 am   By Adam Marshall

Immediately following the announcement of Microsoft’s Xbox One, many gamers were up in arms about the new system’s always-on Internet requirement and resistance to used games. At E3, the Playstation 4 seemed to pull ahead specifically because of the absence of these features. Even so, it was still surprising when yesterday, Don Mattrick, president of interactive entertainment business at Microsoft, released a statement announcing that the Xbox One would drop its 24-hour Internet connection and retain the use of hard-copy... Read more

The Moviegoer: Man of Steel in Awesome, if not Guiding, Beams of Light

Last updated on: June 21, 2013 at 12:51 am   By Nick Olson

Each week in The Moviegoer, Nick Olson examines new and upcoming films. In Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, the name “Superman” is only uttered once or twice, and when he wears the caped suit, it’s a muted–not blinding bright–red and blue. Some viewers will chalk up the details of Snyder’s (and Goyer’s and Nolan’s) reimagination to another instance of “going gritty”–and I suppose there’s something to that, particularly in the film’s controversial, climactic scene–but the mixture of grey to tone down... Read more

Exodus International President’s Apology Represents a Hopeful Opportunity For the Church

Last updated on: June 20, 2013 at 9:45 am   By Faith Newport

Throughout its thirty-seven years of operation, Exodus International has been infamous for championing the Christian “ex-gay” movement. “Ex-gay” organizations advance the belief that, with the help of Christ, anyone within the LGBTQ community can experience a profound reversal in their sexual desires and attractions–even to the point of becoming exclusively heterosexually oriented. Organizations like Exodus have had a tremendous influence on the way that wider Christian culture treats LGBTQ people, and their pie-crust-promise approach of extraordinary, extra-Biblical change has left... Read more

ELSEWHERE: More Original Material Is Coming From Netflix

Last updated on: June 19, 2013 at 10:07 pm   By Jason Morehead

In its continuing efforts to become less dependent on other companies (i.e., movie and television studios) for its content, Netflix is seeking to create more original content. Earlier this year, the company rolled out House of Cards and the revived Arrested Development, and now they’ve struck a deal with DreamWorks Animation. Which gives them new content and, perhaps more importantly, increased name recognition with younger viewers. Read more
