ELSEWHERE: Patriotism and Christian Engagement
Last updated on: July 8, 2013 at 9:52 am By Adam Marshall
Maybe this is always the case, but it seems like there are a lot of things happening in the public sphere right now that affect Christians deeply (e.g. the DOMA decision, the Texas abortion bill, the alleged beating of Christian protesters at a gay pride rally, etc.). Thankfully, these events have also spurred many thoughtful believers to ask how to engage passionately in political discourse without transgressing the bounds of neighborly love. On July 4, the folks at Resurgence published this... Read more

ELSEWHERE: The Limits Of Neuroscience
Last updated on: July 8, 2013 at 9:52 am By Jason Morehead
The Curator‘s Sabrina Little responds to and riffs on a recent David Brooks column regarding the limits of neuroscience and the dangers of “scientism.” Neuroscience can offer many beneficial insights into human behavior, but, as Little writes, it also “leaves us feeling unsettled and unduly exposed” when applied too broadly. Proverbs for Facebook, Twitter, and Blogs
Last updated on: July 8, 2013 at 8:19 am By Derek Rishmawy
I’ve been working through the Proverbs with my college students this summer and our pursuit of wisdom this last week led us to a discussion of how we use our words. As a practical matter, the sages had plenty to say about our language: when to keep quiet, speak up, address authority, and dozens of other observations about our everyday use of language. Looking at it theologically, this shouldn’t surprise us. The doctrine of creation teaches us that we are... Read more

Elsewhere: Bringing the Tatooine Sky to Earth
Last updated on: July 4, 2013 at 11:08 pm By Erin Straza
Have you ever wondered what the sky would look like if our moon were larger? Say, the size of Jupiter or Uranus? Ron Miller did. As a conceptual space artist and former art director at the National Air & Space Museum, Miller used a personal photograph and swapped out our moon for the other planets in our solar system. The results are astounding, reminding me of Tatooine’s sky from Star Wars. Check out Miller’s art photography featured at FastCoDesign.com. Read more

ELSEWHERE: In Praise of ‘Star Trek: Voyager’
Last updated on: July 4, 2013 at 11:12 pm By Geoffrey Reiter
When I wrote on Star Trek for CaPC Magazine Issue #5, space considerations did not allow me to discuss the fourth Trek incarnation, Voyager. Over at RogerEbert.com, Ian Grey has some interesting thoughts on what he calls “convulsively inventive humanist science fiction.” I could quibble with some of the details, but there’s some solid commentary on how Voyager does (and doesn’t) fit with the Trek vision I discussed.
