ELSEWHERE: Pacific Rim and the Immensity of God

Last updated on: August 7, 2013 at 11:00 am   By Derek Rishmawy

While our own Geoffrey Reiter explored Del Toro’s rejection of the apocalypse and love for humanity in Pacific Rim, over at The Gospel Coalition, John Perritt points us to the way Jaegers and Kaiju remind us of the fear of a truly immense Lord:  “No one and no thing deserves fear, for it belongs to the One who has the power to cast us into hell or receive us in heaven. Fear belongs to him and him alone.” Read more

ELSEWHERE: U.S. State Department Shelters in Place

Last updated on: August 7, 2013 at 4:47 am   By S. L. Whitesell

U.S. embassies are closed in 20 some nations this week. Apparently there’s some intelligence that’s pretty specific except for the location. Some have described the reaction as “cringing,” arguing that it’s unbecoming for the world’s only superpower to hide at the mere threat of violence. Embassies, especially ours, have a precarious dual role: on the one hand, they represent a permanent diplomatic presence, a symbol of global cooperation. On the other hand, they are an island of sovereign American soil... Read more

Selfie Obsession: On Our Ongoing Attempts to Picture Our True Selves

Last updated on: August 6, 2013 at 4:21 am   By Martyn Jones

According to a poll that Casey N. Cep cites in her delightful essay on selfies, about 30 percent of photos snapped by Millennials are self-shots. The genre has exploded with the iPhone and has resulted in a proliferation of photo-sharing platforms designed to work with it. Our generation is apparently preoccupied with looking at pictures of themselves. After a brief recap of the history of self-portraiture, Cep gets at the heart of the impulse to auto-photograph: We cherish the possibility that... Read more

ELSEWHERE: An Abandoned Walmart Becomes a Huge Library

Last updated on: August 5, 2013 at 4:27 am   By Martyn Jones

For some, big box stores are a symbol for American over-consumption. In McAllen, Texas, one such structure is becoming a symbol for something else entirely: literacy. A derelict 124,500-square-foot Walmart there has been transformed into the largest single-floor public library in the United States. The massive overhaul involved the creation of over a dozen public meeting spaces and study areas, 64 computer labs, and an “acoustically separated lounge for teens.” Here’s to making all things new! Check out the photos... Read more
