The Hyped-up Claims over China

Last updated on: October 19, 2012 at 12:30 am   By C. Ryan Knight

During Tuesday night’s presidential debate, Mitt Romney brought up economic issues related to China multiple times. Writing for The New Republic, John B. Judis looked into the seriousness of Romney’s claims. Judis concluded that “not only is Romney exaggerating the China threat, but he’s doing so at the expense of more, or equally, pressing economic and social issues.” According to Judis, a number of other issues affect China’s economic advantages over America. Cost of production is much lower for one.... Read more

Reality TV: Making Western Civilization Smarter and Better?

Last updated on: October 18, 2012 at 2:02 am   By Jason Morehead

I hate reality TV. Yes, there may be some “reality” shows with redeeming values, but on the whole, I find it represents a nadir of entertainment. It encourages and celebrates narcissistic, sociopathic, and unconscionable behavior in its subjects, and through shrewd manipulation (i.e., editing), makes it easy for viewers to develop a sense of smug self-righteousness as we watch the drama unfold before us. But not everyone agrees with me. For example, anthropologist Grant McCracken believes that reality TV can actually make us... Read more

The Great Marshmallow Trust Test

Last updated on: October 18, 2012 at 1:54 am   By Erin Wyble Newcomb

A new study from Cognition complicates the traditional “marshmallow test” of children’s impulse control. In the original test, children are told they can eat one marshmallow now or wait (usually about 15 minutes) and get two marshmallows by showing restraint. The initial interpretation of this test suggested that children who were able to exercise self-control were more likely to be successful later in life; Maia Szalavitz writes in TIME Magazine that “This apparently trivial challenge has serious implications, however. Children... Read more

The Moviegoer: Sinister Images

Last updated on: October 18, 2012 at 11:11 am   By Nick Olson

Each week in The Moviegoer, Nick Olson examines new and upcoming films. Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) both has trouble seeing and is increasingly troubled by what he does see. In Scott Derrickson’s latest horror film, Sinister, we continually see shots of Ellison fumbling, readjusting, and donning his black-rimmed glasses. More often, we get close-up shots of Ellison looking intently through those glasses as the reflection of sinister images rolls across the lenses, and we see him growing more disturbed by them.... Read more

Mixed Signals: Staged Brand Experiences or Building Blocks for Belonging?

Last updated on: October 17, 2012 at 10:07 am   By Erin Straza

You remember Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs—it prescribes the building blocks individuals need to achieve something dubbed self actualization. In order to work toward the pinnacle, our physiological, personal safety, love and belonging, and self esteem needs must be met, respectively. Then we arrive at some idealistic state of personhood, which no one has ever experienced but supposedly exists. Marketing specialists keep these psychological goals in mind to develop strategic messages that impact buyer behavior. For example, fear appeals stimulate our... Read more
