“Always” – Killswitch Engage

From their latest Disarm the Descent, “Always” is a picture of love through suffering, an acknowledgement of the momentary nature of human love and our fading legacy after we die.

In these moments of loss and torment
When the vast skies don’t seem to call to you
When the weight of this world bears down
And the stars have fallen like tears

I am with you always,

From the darkness of night until the morning
I am with you always,
From life until death takes me

Monuments built in remembrance of me
But monuments fade, erode and decay
The memories are all that remain

As far as east is from the west, remember

I am with you always,
From the darkness of night until the morning
I am with you always,
From life until death takes me

When hope seems lost down and lowly,
I am here with you always

I am with you always,
From the darkness of night

I am with you always,
From the darkness of night until the morning
I am with you always,
From life until death takes me

I am with you always,
From life until death takes me

“Bow Down/I Been On” – Beyonce

Betrayal. That is what many other female artists felt when Beyonce’s new track was leaked a couple weeks ago. After the high praise of Beyonce’s feminine prowess at her Superbowl halftime performance, this song came as a surprise with its lyrical bravado and diss of every other female who is not Beyonce. Interestingly, her voice has been re-pitched to sound like a little girl with the opening hook of “Bow Down” and then re-pitched again for all of “I Been On” as she sounds like a gruff sounding male rapper. Beyonce even takes on lyrical tropes from male rappers and ends with her own boast. A disappointing turn for Beyonce.

I’m out that H-town
Coming, coming down
I’m coming down dripping candy on the ground
H, H-town, town, I’m coming down
Coming down dripping candy on the ground

I know when you were little girls
You dreamt of being in my world
Don’t forget it , don’t forget it
Respect that, bow down ******
I took some time to live my life
But don’t think I’m just his little wife
Don’t get it twisted, get it twisted
This my ****, bow down ******

Bow down ******, bow bow down ******
Bow down bitches, bow bow down ******
H-town ******, h-h-town ******
I’m so crown, bow bow down ******

I’m out that H-town
Coming, coming down
I’m coming down dripping candy on the ground
H, H-town, town, I’m coming down
Coming down dripping candy on the ground

I been on, I been on, I been on
Tell me who gone take me off
Take me off, take me off, take me off

Rolling high, leather and Louis
Keep it trill, that’s what good
Kiss my momma, show that love
Pop them bottles in that club
I heard your boo was talking lip
I told my crew to smack that trick
Smack that trick, smack that trick
Guess what they did, smack that trick
Gold everything, gold ** chain*
Gold ** rings, gold ** fangs**
You could see me stunt when you turn and you scream
You could see me stunt when you turn and you scream
I’m bigger than life, my name in the lights
I’m the number one chick, ain’t need no hype
The capital b means, I’m ‘bout that life
The capital b means, I’m ‘bout that life

I’m in to my baby hair with my dookie braids
French’s, boodaying in the parking lot
Shout out to Willie D
I was in that Willie D video when I was about fourteen, looking crazy
Shout out Pimp C
You know we used to sneak and listen to that UGK
Didn’t do your girl but your sister was alright, ****
In ya homeboy’s Caddy last night
Hold up, Texas trill
H-town going down, man

“Fla$e Teacher$” – Shai Linne

A bold new song from Shai Linne tearing apart the prosperity gospel and including what may be the only appropriate use of the diss in a Christian context, naming the names of 12 false teachers.

One two one two, Yo!
Special dedication to my brothers and sisters on the great continent of Africa
To Saints to Malawi, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe.
Don’t be deceived by what America is sending y’all man

Let me begin, while there is still ink left in my pen,
I am set to contend for Truth you can bet will offend,
Deception within the church man, who’s letting them in?
We talked about this years ago, let’s address it again.
And I ain’t really trying to start beef,
But some who claim to be part of his sheep got some sharp teeth. (They’re wolves)
You cast at me when you criticize them when you criticize them,
But Jesus told us: Matthew 7:16, we can recognize them!
And God forbid that for the love of some fans,
I keep quiet and watch them die with their blood on my hands!
So there’s nothing left for me to do except to speak to you in the spirit of Jude 3 and 2 Peter 2
And I know that some would label me a Pharisee,
Because today the only heresy is saying that there’s heresy:
“How dare they be specific and drop some clarity on the popularity of the gospel of Prosperity”
Turn off TBN that channel is overrated.
The Pastor’s speak bogus statements, financially motivated.
It’s kind of like a pyramid scheme.
Visualize Heretics Christianizing the American dream.
It’s foul and deceitful, they’re lying to people,
Teaching that camels squeeze through the eye of a needle!
Ungodly and wicked, ask yourself how can they not be convicted treating Jesus like a lottery ticket.
And you’re thinking they’re not the dangerous type because some of their statements are right,
They’re only proof that Satan comes as an angel of light.
This teaching can’t be believed without a cost,
The lie is you can achieve a crown without a cross
And I hear it all the time when they speak on the block
Even unbelievers are shocked how they’re fleecing the flock
It should be obvious then, yet I’ll explain why it’s in,
Peep the Bible it’s in 1 Timothy 6:9 and 10
It talks about how the desire for riches has left many souls on fire and stitches mired in ditches
Tell me, who would teach you to pursue as a goal the very thing that the Bible said will ruin your soul!
Yet they’re encouraging the love of money,
To make it worse, they’ve exported this garbage into other countries!
My heart breaks even now as I am rhyming.
Do you wanna know what all false teachers have in common?
It’s called selfism the fastest growing religion; they just dress it up and call it “Christian”.
Don’t be deceived by this funny biz, if you come to Jesus for money, then he’s not your God, money is!
Jesus is not a means to an end,
The Gospel is He came to redeem us from sin,
And that is the message forever I yell!
If you’re living your best life now you’re heading for hell!

(Talk to them)
Joel Osteen – false teacher!
(Let them know)
Creflo Dollar is a false teacher!
(Who else? Who else?)
Benny Hinn is a false teacher!
I know they’re popular but don’t let them deceive ya!
(Talk to them)
TD Jakes is a false teacher!
(Tell the Truth)
Joyce Meyer is a false teacher!
(Let them know)
Paula White is a false teacher!
Use your discernment, let the Bible lead ya!
(Keep going)
Fred Price is a false teacher!
(Tell the Truth)
Kenneth Copland is a false teacher!
(Who else? Who else?)
Robert Tilton is a false teacher!
I know they’re popular but don’t let them deceive ya!
(Talk to them)
Eddie Long is a false teacher!
(Let them know)
Juanita Bynum is a false teacher!
(Who else? Who else?)
Paul Crouch is a false teacher!
Use your discernment, let the Bible lead ya!

“But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.” 2 Peter 2:1-3

 “Hurricane” – MS MR

Lizzy Plapinger’s (the Ms of Ms Mr) recognition of her inner darkness is something like a hurricane in her soul. And the only cure for her depravity is a light, outside of herself, to lead her out of the darkness. The briefest glimpse, a mere flickering of the one true light “to guide me when I fall in tragedy.”

Didn’t know what this would be
But I knew I didn’t see
What you thought
You saw in me

I jumped the gun
So sure you’d split and run
Ready for the worst
Before the damage was done

The storm never came
Or it never was
Didn’t know getting lost in the blue
It meant I wound up losing you

Welcome to the inner workings of my mind
So dark and foul I can’t disguise
Can’t disguise
Nights like this
I become afraid
Of the darkness in my heart
Hurricane

What’s wrong with me
Why not understand and see
I never saw
What you saw in me

Keep my eyes open
My lips sealed
My heart closed
And my ears peeled

Welcome to the inner workings of my mind
So dark and foul I can’t disguise
Can’t disguise
Nights like this I become afraid
Of the darkness in my heart
Hurricane

Make ash and leave the dust behind
Lady diamond in the sky
Wild light
Glowing bright
To guide me
When I fall
I fall on tragedy

Welcome to the inner workings of my mind
So dark and foul I can’t disguise
Can’t disguise
Nights like this I become afraid
Of the darkness in my heart
Hurricane

“Accidental Racist” – Brad Paisley feat. LL Cool J

There are some serious issues with this song. Paisley and LL Cool J’s intention was to begin a conversation on racial relations and heal old wounds, which is a very worthy goal. We need more artists to recognize that we do not live in a post-racial society and create art which begins conversations that lead to restoration. Like Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder’s “Ebony and Ivory”, this song has had it’s share of detractors and for good reason. Unfortunately, every other line completely missteps in addressing the issue and ends up coming across as extremely racist. The more egregious lines have been highlighted below to ponder the ways in which we as Christians can navigate discussions of race through forgiveness, grace and our common humanity through the God who created all of us.

To the man that waited on me at the Starbucks down on Main, I hope you understand
When I put on that t-shirt, the only thing I meant to say is I’m a Skynyrd fan
The red flag on my chest somehow is like the elephant in the corner of the south
And I just walked him right in the room
Just a proud rebel son with an ‘ol can of worms
Lookin’ like I got a lot to learn but from my point of view

I’m just a white man comin’ to you from the southland
Tryin’ to understand what it’s like not to be
I’m proud of where I’m from but not everything we’ve done
And it ain’t like you and me can re-write history
Our generation didn’t start this nation
We’re still pickin’ up the pieces, walkin’ on eggshells, fightin’ over yesterday
And caught between southern pride and southern blame

They called it Reconstruction, fixed the buildings, dried some tears
We’re still siftin’ through the rubble after a hundred-fifty years
I try to put myself in your shoes and that’s a good place to begin
But it ain’t like I can walk a mile in someone else’s skin

‘Cause I’m a white man livin’ in the southland
Just like you I’m more than what you see
I’m proud of where I’m from but not everything we’ve done
And it ain’t like you and me can re-write history
Our generation didn’t start this nation
And we’re still paying for the mistakes
That a bunch of folks made long before we came
And caught between southern pride and southern blame

Dear Mr. White Man, I wish you understood
What the world is really like when you’re livin’ in the hood
Just because my pants are saggin’ doesn’t mean I’m up to no good
You should try to get to know me, I really wish you would
Now my chains are gold but I’m still misunderstood
I wasn’t there when Sherman’s March turned the south into firewood
I want you to get paid but be a slave I never could
Feel like a new fangled Django, dodgin’ invisible white hoods
So when I see that white cowboy hat, I’m thinkin’ it’s not all good
I guess we’re both guilty of judgin’ the cover not the book
I’d love to buy you a beer, conversate and clear the air
But I see that red flag and I think you wish I wasn’t here

I’m just a white man
(If you don’t judge my do-rag)
Comin’ to you from the southland
(I won’t judge your red flag)
Tryin’ to understand what it’s like not to be
I’m proud of where I’m from
(If you don’t judge my gold chains)
But not everything we’ve done
(I’ll forget the iron chains)
It ain’t like you and me can re-write history
(Can’t re-write history baby)

Oh, Dixieland
(The relationship between the Mason-Dixon needs some fixin’)
I hope you understand what this is all about
(Quite frankly I’m a black Yankee but I’ve been thinkin’ about this lately)
I’m a son of the new south
(The past is the past, you feel me)
And I just want to make things right
(Let bygones be bygones)
Where all that’s left is southern pride
(RIP Robert E. Lee but I’ve gotta thank Abraham Lincoln for freeing me, know what I mean)
It’s real, it’s real
It’s truth
