The Tiny Whispering Memory

Last updated on: June 10, 2022 at 8:27 pm   By Sherry Antonetti

The summer I learned to swim, I was exploring underwater at the YMCA, lost in my thoughts somewhere between mermaids and dolphins when I saw someone swimming towards me.  It was my dad.  He and I smiled at each other underwater, but I admit, it took me a moment to recognize him because I’d been elsewhere.  It is a memory of my dad’s smile.  It is a memory of me of what my dad looks like when he’s looking at... Read more

We Are Not Called to Win

Last updated on: June 7, 2022 at 11:33 pm   By Sherry Antonetti

Just a reminder to all who want to follow Christ, who want to be disciples.  The witness of the fifty including children, killed in Nigeria on Pentecost Sunday could not be more clear.   They are martyrs of the faith, who wear crowns in Heaven and know the glory and peace and joy that comes from being fully in the presence of the Holy Trinity.   We get to slog it out here in the slow drip of martyrdom for the faith... Read more

Becoming Invisible

Last updated on: June 6, 2022 at 10:36 pm   By Sherry Antonetti

In my sojourn through Catholic media, I notice a lot of scorn for whosever is “doing it wrong.”  People planning to shred a program or a workshop or a book series, people bashing the Pope or this newspaper or that one, or this media or that one, this group that holds to a tradition, or this one that wrestles with a modern sensibility. It doesn’t seem to matter right or left, people have out the torches and feel justified in... Read more

The Vanishing Act of Childhood

Last updated on: June 4, 2022 at 9:36 pm   By Sherry Antonetti

Everyone knows that nothing makes the not yet grown up set we’re legally obligated to supervise and sustain vanish faster than a sink full of dishes, lawn work or public displays of affection by mom and dad. However, what I did not know until recently, was the power of other adult arenas to motivate my teen and up crew to assist with the first two. For example, take job applications. The concept of a summer job once one teen has... Read more

Part of Why I Write is to Find Out What is Churning in My Brain…

Last updated on: June 3, 2022 at 8:32 pm   By Sherry Antonetti

In the past week, I’ve been to an in person graduation, a virtual graduation, watched an online and an in person movie, gone to the pool, jumped off the diving board, seen a falling star, barbecued ribs and read a book. My teens also through a party, we had a bonfire, ordered tickets for a concert in June and ate ice cream.  I love seizing the day, but don’t want to make a habit of trying to do everything on... Read more

Surrendering, Security, and All of That

Last updated on: June 1, 2022 at 6:17 pm   By Sherry Antonetti

This weekend, we celebrated the Feast of the Ascension, Christ joining God the Father, and promising to give us the gift of the Holy Spirit.  To those who do not understand the reality of the Resurrection, the Ascension likewise makes no sense. To those who believe that God intends and invites us continually to come to His great feast, death is not the end, and there is a joy possible even amidst great grief, because grief does not reign forever. ... Read more

My Summer Book List

Last updated on: May 27, 2022 at 6:37 pm   By Sherry Antonetti

I’ve tried to explain to my children and my classes, that books aren’t just assignments that you hunt down, kill and mount on the wall like a stuffed boar head.  (Seriously there was one in the old beach house, creepiest thing ever).   Books are a means of walking through another person’s mind –and granted, some aren’t so interesting, but if you stick with it, you will find a great many minds worth knowing beyond your own.   With that in mind,... Read more

Come and Stay

Last updated on: May 23, 2022 at 9:33 pm   By Sherry Antonetti

“Come and stay at my house” These are the words of Lydia in today’s first reading.  The words kept resonating in my heart. If we think of ourselves as the many rooms Jesus has prepared, when we receive, we are saying, “Come and stay in my house.” and when we minister to others, it is Jesus inviting them into His interior castle. We always think we are doing something for God, but in reality, when we serve others, God is... Read more

So Yesterday…I Tempted Fate

Last updated on: May 22, 2022 at 11:07 pm   By Sherry Antonetti

And the rains came and started our basement project early. We bailed. We pulled up carpet. It was a mess. As a bonus feature, our washer and dryer quit last week…so towels are at a premium.  The new appliances arrive Tuesday.  I admit, I always feel betrayed when my machines quit…like I’m still here. I’m still going.   However, I’ve come to know, vacuums, dishwashers, dryers and washers age in dog years in my home…and I am kept young by the... Read more
