- To What End?
To What End?

Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
If we look at the wealthiest, most powerful people on this Earth at this time, they are almost universally, a miserable lonely lot. Elon Musk, President Trump, Jeff Bezos, they have women, but they seem almost indifferent –it is merely the flavor of the month. They have everything, all things, instantly and yet, they are groping, grasping, craving, demanding the one thing that money cannot buy –and the only thing that satisfies.
They are of course, going about it exactly the wrong way. They want what can only be freely given, what can only be freely offered, actual love, actual friendship, actual mercy, actual forgiveness. They do not recognize the holes in their hearts, and so the holes get bigger exponentially with every demand, with every other need saited, and that emptiness compounds faster than interest.

These folks have torn down their barns and built bigger ones, only to want to do so again. At some point, the entire world will become their barn, and the bulging bank accounts will not suffice. All of the universe owed, cataloged and measured, will not suffice. These souls keep shrinking as they continue expanding their domination of thought, of practice, of everything.
A friend of mine talked about how her daughter asked the question, “Do you think (and they were talking about the President) needs a hug?” and the answer is yes. He needs what he will not seek, nor accept. He needs to recognize something (God) bigger than him, bigger than his ambitions, bigger than all his aspirations, and to respond with humility. “Fear of the Lord,” is deference, awe, adoration, and recognition that we are the created, and we owe all to the Creator.
Heaven is not a place of endless leisure –leisure is relaxing and lovely to the extent it restores –if we do not need restoring, then leisure itself becomes merely an activity. Heaven is a place of rejoicing and endless prayer –for the salvation of those most in need of God’s mercy. The people of Heaven do not tire of praying, nor of seeking graces for those of us here who wrestle with the world, with God, and ourselves. The labor itself, restores the world, and amplifies the perfect joy experienced by the Church triumphant.
The saints are busy. Our job, our lives, are a labor towards being saints to those around us. Every gift, every treasure, every talent, every experience is there to provide for us, the means to further the kingdom of God. To what end all this treasure and wealth? To allieviate suffering, pain, trials, and wrongs. To what end all this power and priviledge? To lift up those who are and have endured injustice and grief, unfairness and cruelty.
Right now, wealth creates a bubble that prevents suffering and even struggling from breaching the walls of the heart. It also prevents friendship, because these powerful rich people see all need as use, and all deference as owed, rather than earned. And so they go on being angry, lonely, destructive people who only serve their most recent needs, and think because they are powerful and rich, they need no one. They are the hungriest, neediest people on the Earth, Gollems, all of them.
They have near infinite wealth and nothing of value. Pity them, and pray for God’s mercy.
