The Summer Not List 2026-06-23T13:18:16-04:00 Sherry Antonetti

It has not been a week, and I am somehow feeling like I’ve forgotten to do something this summer.

Thursday, June 18th was the last day of school, and I had gone on the pub crawl the day before with my department.

That day, after checking out and cleaning out and clearing out my classroom, we went swimming and had ice cream.   Summer day 1, check! On Friday, we played Magic the Gathering, ate pizza out, and went to the mall for some summer spree shopping.  Saturday, we attended a graduation party and saw family and played games and watched Jaws, the original summer block buster movie.  (I remember seeing previews for it while waiting to see Disney’s Cinderella in Beaumont).

Sunday, mass, Father’s Day, gardening, feasting on BBQ and Bluebell Ice cream and picking up our daughter from her trip to Greece for three weeks.   Monday, one daughter had a doctor’s appointment for a physical, I read, took her also to do volunteering at a local pool, and went to mass.  We also made chicken curry and watched two movies, Legally Blonde and Grease.

Today, it is raining, and we are going to the movies.   What I know thus far, is we are doing a lot, and yet feel restless, like we need to somehow, settle into summer, where nothing need be done, to feel like the day has been seized.

Somehow, I thought that would be easier as they got older.  What it left me with, was trying to figure out how I want to spend my summer, which is somewhere between get everything done everywhere, all at once…

and…

Which strikes me as being in large part a perfect example of how the spiritually struggling soul gets it wrong every time.   I’m praying the rosary and the litany of the hours and going to daily mass and the chaplet and and and and…or I’m just trying to make it to Sunday mass on time with all in tow.

Recently, one of my children was diagonesed with ADHD. As I’ve done more digging into not merely the diagonsis but the symptoms and manifestations, I’ve come pretty close to a self diagnosis which anyone who has spent five mintues with me when I’m excited about anything, could also tell you.

Tons of intentions, execution is the issue.   Fortunately, God doesn’t seem to be bothered by whether I’m in Martha or Mary mode activity wise, and is using this time, with the rain, with the garden, with the fifty-three days left to help my spinning brain slow down.
We're given so many decades and so many mysteries because life is full of decades and infinite mystery.
My daughter brought home a rosary from Greece, the perfect cure.  Good old Mom, she knows what we need.   Summer did not need to be seized, measured, counted, or found wanting.  The soul needed to be stilled and choose the better portion.
