As the chocolates and all things pink and red begin to fill stores and mailing lists, I turn my heart to my heart. I turn to a love spell.
I turn to the places that want to be cherished, to be desired, to be held gently.
Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. — Author Unclear (multiple sources say Lao Tzu, but others say this is a misattribution.)
I’ve spent so much time turning away from myself and towards another, though they were a well that would be there, patiently waiting for me to fill myself whenever I needed.
But I am the source of my love magick.
So, this Valentine’s Day, I return to my own spell.
To the spell that began with that first breath.

Entering the Heart of My Magick
I’m starting a new altar, an altar to myself. I realize that the way I create altars have been in devotion to deities, to processes, to camps I teach at, and to classes I help facilitate. And they support me, but they are not for me.
I create an altar to myself, one with a picture that reminds me of my strength. A place for a rosewood wand I chose. A mirror that’s been imbued with the power I call forth to my body and my heart.
Every morning, I sit in meditation, in the place of before-anything-else-happens. The place that is me in relationship to nothing else but me. The place of stillness and coming back. I sit in the knowing that I show up for myself. I promise.
I place a drop of a special oil on myself, right between my beasts, on a tattoo that I got to hold my heart in grace and fierceness.
Every day, I will return to this altar and to the mirror. And I will tell myself: I am mine before I am anyone else’s. I can’t remember where I heard that, but it has become a mantra of holding, of reconnecting when I feel a little lost.
I love you.
I love you.
I love you.
And a ritual that is only for me. Only for my heart. Only for the ways it asks of me in that moment. It’s just for me.
I hope that you too explore and celebrate the curves and chambers of your heart. I wish that you find the ways it is softer or harder, and lean into those places of desire or longing or despair or joy.
Let your heart be a precious thing that can be held in all moments.
Let your heart be a wild thing of wonder. A place to call home. A touch point of courage. A resting place for weary moments.
May you be loved in all of it.
(Perhaps we can do this together. Read on…)

Become a Love Spell of Life Together
And I’m offering to hold hearts during this month (and possibly beyond. Aphrodite has thoughts about this….).
If you’d like to be added to an altar I’m building to love, feel free to comment below. Or message me or DM me, however you can get a hold of me.
(Or go to my website and use the Contact form.)
I just need your name. And if you want to share a sentence or two about why, I will include that as well. The spell will be for your heart to be held, so even if you don’t have a specific, that is the intention I will hold for you.
I’ll post about it in about a month and how that’s going.
Let’s hold our hearts. Let’s become a love spell of life together.
About Irisanya Moon
I’m a Witch. I’m a writer. I’m a priestess, teacher, drummer, feminist, and initiate in the Reclaiming tradition. I serve the gods, my community, and the Earth. I’ve called myself a Witch for nearly 20 years, and my life has been infused with magick. I am interested in shifting stories – the ones we tell ourselves and the ones that are told about us. I’m continuously inspired to engage as the storyteller and the story, the words and the spaces between. I am a devotee of Aphrodite, Hecate, the Norns, and Iris. I seek to find love and to inspire love by reminding us we are not alone, while also meeting myself at the crossroads, holding the threads of life, and bringing down messages from the gods. I am a Witch. You can read more about the author here.
