Detained children at Ursula Detention Center, McAllen, Texas

First, Deborah Piroch of Human Life International, sends this follow-up comment to my Wednesday piece:

Recently the Washington Post reported that a 10-year-old migrant child with Down syndrome was removed from the custody of her mother, although her Father lives only an hour away from the Texas shelter and is a U.S. resident. Human Life International (HLI) advocates for all children both before and after birth and finds it ironic that many of the same individuals who are fine with aborting Down children in the womb because it is a “restriction to abortion,” are not fine with this young girl being torn from her family at a later stage of development. Not only that, but many in this coterie fighting for this migrant girl also applauded former presidential candidate Hilary Clinton for receiving an award from Planned Parenthood in 2014, though she advocates abortion up until the day of birth. A life is a life, whether ten days or 80 years old. May all Down syndrome children, pre-born and otherwise, be accorded the proper dignity due all human life.

Second, a reader sent me a list of organizations that are mobilizing to help immigrant children separated from their families. Please read the article and help however you’re able.

Meanwhile, President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday doing what he himself could have done at any time with a phone call: halting his administration’s policy of separating children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. Because this is President Trump, the executive order does nothing substantial. The order “does not end the ‘zero-tolerance’ policy that criminally prosecutes all adults caught crossing the border illegally,” nor does it “change anything yet for the some 2,300 children taken from their families since the policy was put into place.”

And adults arrested with their children? They’ll stay together – indefinitely, waiting for their cases to be resolved.

Read the full AP story. Don’t have time to? It basically adds up to: thanks for nuthin’, Mr. Trump.

EDIT: the executive order contains a typo.
