LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

By Andy Hale

Have you ever considered that certainty is an act of faithlessness? Consider just how much of our lives, methodology, practices and religious framework we have in “correct order”? Could it be in the midst of getting right thinking and doing in order that we forgot about the mysterious God that calls us forth into faith and often uncertainty?

“Without certainty, we fear that faith is on life support at best, dead and buried at worst. And who wants a dead or dying faith?” asked Peter Enns, the best-selling author and professor at Eastern University. “So, this fear of losing a handle on certainty leads to a preoccupation with correct thinking, making sure familiar beliefs are defended and supported at all costs”

We sat down with the author of The Bible Tells Me So, The Evolution of Adam, and The Sin of Certainty, to discuss challenging and fulfilling journey of deconstructing our fixed image of God and how God works in the world.

Pete’s personal theological journey of deconstruction led to significant life and career changes, including the loss of his teaching position at Westminster Theological Seminary in 2008.

Peter Enns is currently the Professor of Biblical Studies at Eastern University and the co-host of “The Bible for Normal People” podcast.
