By Andy Hale

This should be no surprise to you, but this is one of the most polarizing times in American politics. Compound this fact with a growing theological divide within American churches and you have a Molotov cocktail waiting to be thrown into beloved community.

So what approach should pastors take on the political dissension? Ultra-patriotic? Blind loyalty? Antiestablishment? Fierce rebellion? Apathy? Silence?

This is not the first time a generation of clergy, nor will we certainly be the last, have faced the challenge of navigating a difficult climate of politics with convey the way of Jesus from the pulpit.

Wes Allen is the Professor of Homiletics at Southern Methodist University Perkins School of Theology. He recently wrote “Preaching in the Era of Trump.”

We sat down Dr. Allen to discuss his book and a theology of preaching.
