LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

I love showcasing writers who work alongside their spouse. Kristin and I sort of work together as she sometimes writes for the Catholic Bard and I encourage her to write essays and poetry. Stephen and his wife Beth host a YouTube show together and also have books together on Amazon. They showcase their love for storytelling, Christ and each other together in their creative endeavors. Stephen has taken his love for Star Trek and created an fan fiction audio drama complete with actors and sound effects. He has written about how to evaluate entertainment through a Catholic world view. You can learn more about his writing process as you…

Meet Star Trek Audio Drama Creator Stephen Gesinski

1. Tell something interesting about yourself.

My name is Stephen Gesinski. I have a deacon for a father who was ordained just before I left for university and my writing career blossomed after my wife and I teamed up to create Catholicism and Coffee.

2. What makes a good Catholic writer?

Someone who understands the faith but also consistently learns and reads.

3. What do you like about being a Catholic/Christian Writer?

I like having faith as a guiding post so that way I don’t fall for the latest trend or whatever seems popular in the eyes of secular folks who do not have that kind of foundation.

4. What is the Main focus of your particular Writing or what do you like to write about?

My main focus lately is how faith intermingles with entertainment and storytelling. If we do not have entertainment, we have no culture. We have no culture; we have no civilization. In my fiction writing I go in various genres to tell stories.

5. How does your Catholic Faith influence your writing?

It helps me remain in truth, both Capital T and lower-case t, I remain grounded if I act in the truth.

6. What’s your favorite article/Post/book/story you have written?

It honestly changes from week to week. I co-host the podcast “Catholicism and Coffee” with my wife Beth and it is often a good time. My best work in books thus far was my book “Film Forming Faith” which I wrote by myself. “When Saints Meet the Sorting Hat” which I co-wrote with my wife, Beth, was a blast because I enjoyed both Harry Potter and Catholicism. For fun I do a web audio drama called “Star Trek Aftermath” mostly with fellow Catholics which is rewarding. I write, direct, produce, and star in that.

7. What is your favorite topic/subject to write about?

Faith and storytelling.

8. Favorite scripture verse.

I have two:

One is Romans 13:4 “…But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a servant of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.”

The other is a catchphrase we use to end “Catholicism and Coffee” I modified it to be short and sweet but it comes from Joshua 1:9

“I command you: be strong and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD, your God, is with you wherever you go.” We use “Be bold, be brave, be courageous.”

9. What Are you currently working on?

We are getting back to doing “Catholicism and Coffee”, we took a hiatus for a bit to figure out some personal stuff. I’m working on “Star Trek Aftermath” and I’m working on a couple of books which I will keep under my hat for now.

10. Name a favorite saint or Catholic or some other figure who inspires you in your life.

St John Paul II was my first pope so he’s a major influence. Fulton Sheen is another. I’d also say my slightly grouchy and sarcastic nature is inspired by St. Jerome.

11. Who is your favorite Living Writer?

Well sadly we lost Peter David which was a loss to the writing community. I would say Andy Weir or Keith R. A. DeCandido

12. If you could have lunch with any deceased writer who would it be, what would you eat and what would you talk about?

I’d say Robert A. Heinlen, he wrote my favorite book “Stranger in a Strange Land”. We’d probably talk about that and storytelling for hours.

13. Name a favorite movie/tv show or music you find worth sharing with others.

Well when I tell people my favorite song of all time is “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, people who know me well respond with “that makes sense”.

14. Can you see one of your books being made into a movie or tv series? Who would you want to star or direct?

Since I haven’t written any fiction as of yet that is published I would say no. However my wife and I have written screenplays and tv scripts that we want to produce.

15. Favorite Historical event.

Events that I have lived through? The election of Pope Leo IV. It was such a long shot to have an American pope and it reminded me of JPII’s election since he was also the “Dark Horse” candidate.

Overall historical event: I’d say the surrender of the Axis in WW2. It brought about the end of a bloody war that although horrible helped us grow.

The German surrender at Akershus Fortress (Norway) on 11 May 1945

The day these other Historical Trivia events happened.

1821 – The Saturday Evening Post is published for the first time as a weekly newspaper.

1875 – Hans Christian Andersen, (born 1805) author of various classic fairy tales dies.

1892 – The father and stepmother of Lizzie Borden are found murdered in their Fall River, Massachusetts home. She will be tried and acquitted for the crimes a year later.

1944 – The Holocaust: A tip from a Dutch informer leads the Gestapo to a sealed-off area in an Amsterdam warehouse, where they find and arrest Jewish diarist Anne Frank, her family, and four others.

1995 – Babe opens in theaters.

2007 – NASA‘s Phoenix Mars lander is launched.

16. What else do you want people to know about anything.

Don’t be an ingrate! That is for myself and everyone else out there. We need gratitude. I would also say if we are to survive as a culture storytelling should return to competent hands. I am not sure the current crop in Hollywood is up to the task of keeping the culture alive. More often than not they seem interested in deconstruction as opposed to construction. I don’t completely blame some folks who have black pilled on entertainment or wish to segregate away from entertainment except for a certain kind. I’m not talking about discerning what is right for you and your family. That is essential but some, for example, may cut anything but “Christian movies” out of their entertainment options. To be honest some Christian movies are just poorly made, written, acted, and have a whole host of problems that I could beat on all day and be objectively correct. However, cutting ourselves off from possibilities of good entertainment is not helpful for the Christian life. Surrounding ourselves in echo chambers is selfish and short sighted.
