Basketball master Michael Jordan is putting his money where his mouth is and taking a stand for police officers across America, but NO good deed goes unpunished with the #BlackLivesMatter crowd.
In a statement released through The Undefeated, the NBA legend announced a $2 million donation to two organizations he feels can properly address the problems facing policing in the inner city and the “cowardly” actions of those intent on killing cops.
He wrote:
As a proud American, a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcement and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers. I grieve with the families who have lost loved ones, as I know their pain all too well.
Jordan’s father, James Jordan Sr., was murdered on the side of the road in 1993, when two young black men decided to rob him and steal his car. His body was found over a week later in a swamp near the South Carolina border.
Jordan continued:
I was raised by parents who taught me to love and respect people regardless of their race or background, so I am saddened and frustrated by the divisive rhetoric and racial tensions that seem to be getting worse as of late. I know this country is better than that, and I can no longer stay silent. We need to find solutions that ensure people of color receive fair and equal treatment AND that police officers – who put their lives on the line every day to protect us all – are respected and supported.
Police officers are near and dear to Jordan as he has enjoyed their protection throughout his 30-year career. “I have the greatest respect for their sacrifice and service,” he added. But he also recognizes that there are others who have had very different interactions with police. But instead of reacting like the Black Lives Matter crowd, Jordan has figured out a way to do something positive to help people come together and stop all this division.
Here’s what he is able to do:
To support that effort, I am making contributions of $1 million each to two organizations, the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Institute for Community-Police Relations’ policy and oversight work is focused on building trust and promoting best practices in community policing. My donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the nation’s oldest civil rights law organization, will support its ongoing work in support of reforms that will build trust and respect between communities and law enforcement. Although I know these contributions alone are not enough to solve the problem, I hope the resources will help both organizations make a positive difference.
But here’s the reaction by one of #BlackLivesMatter leader Kofi Ademola, who said this after learning of Jordan’s generosity:
“Unfortunately, these celebrities are rich but they are clueless to the realities on the ground. They aren’t deconstructing or examining the systems of oppression.
“In short, it’s a false narrative that trust needs to be fostered with the police. Policing is inherently violent and as an institution it needs to be abolished along with the ‘Prison Industrial Complex.'”
Yet, in the face of such a disgusting retort, Jordan rises above the scorn and proves he’s truly a proud America, calling it a privilege “to live in the world’s greatest country.” The fact that this country made him rich is not lost on him. His call for working together to create positive change in our communities is the only message worth paying attention to.
Thank you, Michael Jordan.
