Trust me, it’s crazy to see your life on television. That’s why every week, I’m going to do a blog posts called “On Second Thought.” These posts are where I will go over the episodes of my Lifetime show as I process the issues presented now that I’ve seen them aired.  I hope you’ll join me for these weekly posts – which will undoubtedly be part-confession, part-explanation, and part-celebration of my life right now!

Episode Nine, Air Date: July 17, 2012

As you can see, the Iron Dog race is a big part of our lives.  In Episode nine, my whole family worried about Dad while he was on the 2,000 mile trek.  In many Iron Dogs, more racers drop out than finish.  The injuries, bad weather, machine break downs, and fatigue take a toll on everyone.

After being concerned for the entire time he’s gone, it’s always very exciting to pack up and go to Fairbanks for the finish! We pack our warmest clothes, pile into our vehicles, and hope to see dad cross the finish line first.  There are a lot of festivities going on around the finish line, so if you’re ever near Fairbanks around that time of year you should definitely stop by!!  Alaska must have the best ice sculptors, because there are usually beautiful statues being created right in front of your eyes. People build a fire on the frozen water, which gives you an idea of how cold it is there. It’s frequently negative thirty degrees at the finish line!

Usually, the engines of our vehicles freeze as we spend the night there, and we have to get up every few hours to turn them on. Once, our vehicle just quit on the way home because it had gotten too cold.  So after Dad had raced 2000 miles on a snow machine, he was out there trying to fix the truck on the side of the road.

Anyway, it’s an exciting tradition.

Dad, I’m proud of you every year, no matter where you finish in the pack!

And speaking of being proud of people, Willow has always been awesome at hair.  This means she’s very helpful when you need some assistance for a special night, but I can barely let Willow babysit Tripp without her trying out a new hairstyle on him. She sometimes does mom’s hair before she goes on her televised interviews, which has caused headlines.  Reporters write that mom is re-inventing her style, but really it’s because she relented and let Willow experiment on her hair! In this episode, Willow took a tour of Trendsetters Beauty School, located about an hour from Wasilla as she tried to decide where to attend hair school.

Even though it is hard on their relationship for Willow to think about her future, I’m so proud of her for trying to perfect her hair skills so she can make a good living for herself.

Plus, I want her to get better, for the purely selfish reason that I love it when I can get free hair care from her!
