An Open Letter to Three Open Letter Writers

Last updated on: October 30, 2012 at 9:19 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

Dear Marcia, John and Victor, I will cut to the chase and say thank you! Along with thousands of other people, your recent open letters have touch my spirit and moved my soul. Most open letters, including my own, probably have little impact on anyone, but I am confident that your words will impact the lives of people far beyond the circle of writer and recipient. Not to put too much pressure on you all, but through your words people’s souls will be healed,... Read more

How This Parent Will Strive to Disagree Better

Last updated on: October 25, 2012 at 11:36 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

On the way to school this morning, the girls and I had a great interaction about how we treat one another. It began as they were talking about a t-shirt that they often wear to school that has the phrase on the front, “I love Lola” followed by the definition of “Lola” . . . “grandmother ” in Tagalog. Middle, “When people read my ‘I love Lola’ shirt they think I’m talking about my dog.” Youngest, “Seriously, don’t people bother to read?”... Read more

Asking the Question, “Do You Allow Guns on Campus?”

Last updated on: October 23, 2012 at 10:26 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

It is hard to believe but in a few short years my first born, my “baby,” will be heading off to college. The browsing has begun and next year we will begin making visits. Truly shocking to this GenX’er dad – not only is the college decision looming before me, but like so many other things that are different than “when I was young,” because my daughter is smarter and more gifted that I was at her age, distilling down the possibilities will... Read more

Election 2012, What Presbyterians Should Care About – Norb Kumagai

Last updated on: October 23, 2012 at 8:47 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

As part of the ongoing Patheos 2012 election coverage and commentary, I am opening up my blog for Presbyterians to answer this week’s question, “What are the key issues at stake in this election for people of your tradition?” I gave no guidance other than to keep it under 500 words and to avoid bashing and dehumanizing rhetoric. If you would like in for this week, message me via my FB Page. First up, Norb Kumagai – We lost our Dad, Lindy Kumagai... Read more

It’s Hard Being the Youngest

Last updated on: October 22, 2012 at 12:04 pm   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

As a wannabe psychologist and sociologist I am fascinated by the impact of birth order on systems: family and organizational. As I cooly and objectively step back and observe the myriad of sibling “laboratories” in my own life, none is more important and meaningful than that of my own brood of three daughters. As the oldest of four siblings, complete with sub-birth orders, I know that the eldest child might get some special treatment solely because we happened to be birthed first. Honestly though, I suspect that there are pluses and minuses to being... Read more

If You Can Find Me, You Can Read Me

Last updated on: October 18, 2012 at 9:01 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

First, I want to thank folks for keeping up with my wandering self as I have  lived so many variations of my social media and blogging life. I am still amazed and humbled that folks read my drivel, so I hope to make the navigation as painless as possible. Now that I have been blogging with Patheos for a while and since my blog on SFGate was dropped, I think I have figured out how to best map my blogging. Most... Read more

A Review of the Neighborhood Social Media Site Nextdoor.com

Last updated on: October 18, 2012 at 8:01 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

I may have mentioned www.nextdoor.com in the past, but I wanted to hold off on my recommendation until I actually used it for a bit. If you have not heard of Nextdoor, it is essentially a private social media site that is made up of your ACTUAL neighbors. Weird right? Yes, a way to interact with your ACTUAL, geographic, humanoid neighbors. I have been a member now for almost a year and was initially invited by a friend of a friend... Read more

No One Likes to be Licked by Surprise

Last updated on: October 15, 2012 at 2:12 pm   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

Last week I was hanging out at one of my “offices” AKA a local coffee shop when this guy walked in with this dog on-leash and trailing closely behind. Now I am not a huge “Don’t bring your dog into food establishments!” kind of guy, but I do think some of us dog owners might be better about realizing that not everyone thinks their puppy is God’s gift to cute {like ours}. The owner struck up a conversation with the barista and... Read more

John Avalos’ Statement on the Impact of the Mirkarimi Decision

Last updated on: October 13, 2012 at 8:47 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

This past week the Board of Supervisors of San Francisco voted to reinstate Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi after Mayor Lee’ attempt to remove him from office for official misconduct. Mirkarimi has previously plead guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment in connection to an incident in which he grabbed and bruised his wife’s arm. As you can imagine, there has been outrage on both sides. Some believe that the Mayor overstepped the bounds of his mayoral authority and others believe that this is one more set-back in the fight against domestic. John Avalos, a... Read more

When Nuns Embrace the “Nones” – Politics and the Future of Faith

Last updated on: October 11, 2012 at 8:57 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

As many of you know any chance that I can stir up the stew of politics, culture and faith, I’m in. As a progressive Christian and  liberal Democrat or conservative Green depending on the day, this year’s election again provides ample fodder for those of us who like to engage in both supporting our beliefs in the public square and trying to model gracious disagreement. During this year’s election cycle, I have been fascinating by the amount of visibility that religion has received by both the Democrats and Republicans.... Read more
