I am a heretic and I talk to my cat, Gustavo — It’s on the internet, so it must be true

Last updated on: November 20, 2012 at 2:42 pm   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

Usually, I do not respond to folks who engage name-calling. When folks attach words like “apostate,” “heresy”  or “theological celebrity” to me, especially when left by people named “guest” or “anonymous,” my guess is that they are NOT interested in having meaningful conversations. Also, I know that there is no way I can respond with, “I know you are, but what am I” with any modicum of graciousness. Yesterday, though, I received an alert from Wikipedia that someone had just made some... Read more

“The State of Our Unions” Conference Call Invitation

Last updated on: November 15, 2012 at 10:44 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

As some of you know, for the past few years I have been on the Board of Directors of California Faith for Equality. While never as active as I would like to be, I am excited about our recent direction setting including the hiring of a new executive director, Eleanor Steinman. After just a few phone calls and in-person interactions, I firmly believe that our faith-based work to bring about marriage equality in CA is headed in a positive direction. After the recent... Read more

Pre-Order Your NEW New Testament

Last updated on: November 15, 2012 at 10:44 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

Last year I was privileged to be part of a group of folks brought together to think about sacred Christian texts, past AND future. Yes, I said future because like many others, I have always felt that the texts that have informed my faith and life in Christ were never meant to be static, rather, were meant to expand and grow. So when Hal Taussig asked me to part of a Church Council who would determine the texts to be included in... Read more

What Historically White Denominations Can Learn From the Republican Party

Last updated on: November 7, 2012 at 11:30 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

The day after election night is like Christmas morning for bloggers and political pundits. Like eager children we come bounding down the stairs ready to rip open and reflect on wins, losses, gaffes and funnies left on the hearth of election night. Oh but where to start? I think I’ll start with race. For as much as some would like to think that we are “over” race or that the whole reason we still have racism is because we keep talking about it, occurrences like John Sununu’s... Read more

Thank you for not voting

Last updated on: November 4, 2012 at 4:53 pm   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

Okay, so in a recent post, I admitted that while I do not hate Mitt Romney, I was not going to vote for him. And while I can certainly take the high road about personal attacks on candidates, as one who does not want him or the accompanying Republican platform elected, if you are a supporter and choosing not to vote, “Thank you.” Because, as David LaMotte puts it so eloquently in this video, “The Myth of Democracy” (2010), “It’s not run by all of us, it’s only run... Read more

God and Politics – Grace Ji-Sun Kim

Last updated on: November 4, 2012 at 4:35 pm   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

I will never forget the answer that George W. Bush gave in an early presidential primary season debate – December 13, 1999 – when he was asked, ‘who is your favorite political philosopher’. He looked into the camera and with a child-like demeanor, he said, “Jesus Christ, because he changed my life.” I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at his answer. Bush’s answer opens up the discussion of how religion and American politics are intertwined. As much as the government wants to... Read more

Sorry, But I Don’t Hate Mitt Romney

Last updated on: November 4, 2012 at 4:47 pm   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

This past weekend, I had the privilege of spending 36 hours in Ohio. Apparently they are getting a good deal of presidential election attention. In fact, I came “this” close to being at a joint Paul Ryan Rally and Pumpkin Chucking event. Good times in Ohio. I am sure the election season can’t be over soon enough for my Ohio friends. While I was there I had a good talk with a friend about what seems to be a genuine HATRED of President Obama. I... Read more

Why I Pray in Times of Disaster

Last updated on: October 30, 2012 at 9:09 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

As it should be, the airwaves have been filled with reporting and accounts of Hurricane Sandy and its impact the eastern part of the the United States. For many of us who are not being directly affected by the storm, it often feels like all we can do is follow the news coverage on TV, track our friends’ updates on Facebook and follow the immediate reporting through our Twitter stream. The struggle for me during these times is how to not treat such... Read more

Ten Questions to Ask When Seeking Sermon Feedback

Last updated on: October 30, 2012 at 9:19 am   By Bruce Reyes-Chow

This post was reposted from my column on www.WorkingPreacher.com. A few weeks ago I had the privilege of preaching at the congregation where my family and I currently worship. Unlike when I guest preach in other locations, where I can pose big-picture questions and take on general church issues, this church is one where I know the context and am part of the community. What this meant is that for the first time in a long while I had to dig just a tad bit... Read more
