Living In Intentional Community

Last updated on: March 16, 2016 at 11:31 am   By Annika Mongan

When I tell people that I share a house with up to half a dozen adults, I often get one of two reactions: jealousy or incredulity. Some think community living is the promised land and they wish they had my life. Others believe living with so many others is a nightmare and they see me as a community ninja superhero or a lunatic who hasn’t learned better yet. The truth is, I am not a community expert. I’ve read some... Read more

Christians And Pagans As Allies

Last updated on: March 4, 2016 at 9:00 am   By Annika Mongan

Pagans who consider themselves allies with Christians are sure to attract animosity from members of both religions. We're told to chose one side and hate the other, even though the lines don't run neatly between religious identities. Read more

Do Pagan Conventions Matter?

Last updated on: February 25, 2016 at 6:17 pm   By Annika Mongan

It made me reflect on why so many Pagans work so hard to make these conventions happen. Nobody is getting rich and famous. Is it simply because we love doing what we do? Read more

Writing This Moment

I ponder change in all of her forms and oscillate between melancholy and joy. What amazes me most is that my life has changed according to prophecy. Read more

Five PantheaCon Highlights

Last updated on: February 17, 2016 at 9:13 pm   By Annika Mongan

Another PantheaCon is over and it already seems like a week has gone by, or two, or maybe I'm still there and about to go to the next thing on the schedule. PantheaCon does that to me. It distorts all sense of time. Each day goes by in a flash, punctuated by meals that always seem to follow each other too quickly. And yet when those short days are over and I am back home, I feel like I am looking back on weeks. Read more

Experiencing PantheaCon As Community

Last updated on: February 13, 2016 at 4:19 pm   By Annika Mongan

It’s Saturday afternoon at PantheaCon and I’m in my hotel room in spite of my chronic case of FOMO – the Fear Of Missing Out. Right now I am missing Godless Bless, A Panel on Atheism/Agnosticism in Paganism and Magick in America: 1820 – 1952, both of which I had added to my schedule of events. I’m having a very different PantheaCon experience from the one I thought I would be having. For one, I am not in the Double... Read more

A Jesus Freak Priestessing To A Witch

Last updated on: February 9, 2016 at 5:06 pm   By Annika Mongan

“We have much more in common than what separates us,” my Jesus Freak friend tells me. I call him a Jesus Freak, but that’s not an insult. It’s the name of a movement that began in Germany in the early 1990s. I was a part of it myself, from the first Freakstock festival in 1995 until I moved to the US. Read more

On Sharing Income

Last updated on: February 2, 2016 at 3:17 pm   By Annika Mongan

Last July my life changed dramatically. One of my housemates offered to support me financially and I quit my day job at a Christian church. The year prior I had sold my business, which I ran for three years while also having a full time job, writing, and building an intentional community. I was more than ready for a break. Read more

Imbolc Is My New Year

Last updated on: January 25, 2016 at 10:00 pm   By Annika Mongan

Samhain is supposed to be the Witch’s new year. Yule is when the sun is reborn. And a couple of weeks later, the Gregorian calendar records another year of our so-called common era. But it isn’t until I have celebrated Imbolc that I am feel like a new year can truly begin. It’s one thing to learn to the meaning of a sabbat through a Pagan book, but an entirely other to play close attention while moving through the wheel of a year yourself. Read more

Tea With an 88-year Old Crone

Last updated on: January 22, 2016 at 3:18 pm   By Annika Mongan

When I got home I placed the card on my altar. My life was too busy to imagine sitting down with an old woman over a cup of tea. It took months before I finally called the number on the card and scheduled a date with MaryAnn. When I finally arrive at her place, I wish I had called and met up with her sooner. Read more
