Medical Aid in Dying Act is a Push for Euthanasia in NY

Last updated on: May 20, 2018 at 11:52 pm   By Patty Knap

This week a hearing was held in Albany on Bill A.2383 which would amend NY’s current public health law to legalize assisted suicide. Disability rights activists are among several groups speaking out in opposition to this proposal that would give physicians the power to end lives under the euphemism, “aid in dying”. The Medical Aid in Dying Act, or bill A.2383-A is being pushed by advocates of “choice” in dying, and was heard in the New York Assembly Health Committee. ... Read more

Hospital Removes Alfie Evans’ Life Support Over His Parents’ Objections

Last updated on: April 23, 2018 at 10:21 pm   By Patty Knap

According to supporters of Alfie Evans and his parents, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital reportedly removed Alfie’s life support over their strong pleas and objections. The decision by the Children’s Hospital to remove Alfie Evans’ life support reportedly came after an emergency meeting between attorneys for Alfie’s parents, an Italian government representative, lawyers for the children’s hospital and the judge who allowed the hospital to proceed previously. As supporters of Alfie told LifeNews, Justice Hayden was unpersuaded by a late move... Read more

Catholic Book Hoarding: Reading Our Way to Holiness

Last updated on: May 20, 2018 at 8:22 pm   By Patty Knap

I suppose I could hoard worse things than Catholic books.  I once saw a show on people’s collections and one person collected used oil can’s from the 1930’s, another had thousands of penguin stuffed animals lining every inch of her home, and another woman collected rooster salt and pepper shakers.  All entirely fine but may I say reading great Catholic books helps us not just in this life, but into eternity!  No rooster salt shaker can do that. The books... Read more

Everyday Heroes: Ordinary Men Leading Holy Lives

Last updated on: May 20, 2018 at 8:19 pm   By Patty Knap

Ordinary Catholic men in the Knights of Columbus can make a big impact in their communities and in people’s lives, and they are the focus of “Everyday Heroes,” a new online video series put out by the Catholic fraternal organization. “This film series offers a glimpse into the many ‘ordinary’ ways in which the Knights serve those around them,” Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said April 3. “‘Everyday Heroes’ are your brothers, friends and co-workers who quietly serve,... Read more

The Miracle Prayer

Last updated on: June 6, 2018 at 6:09 pm   By Patty Knap

The Miracle Prayer is prayed by thousands all over the world every day. At the age of ten, Peter Rookey was blinded by a fire cracker exploding right in front of his face.  Doctors told his parents the damage was so great they could not hope for any sight for their son at all. But Peter’s devout mother added the intention of Peter’s eyesight to the family’s nightly rosary, and asked everyone she knew to pray as well. Peter prayed too.  “My... Read more

Alfie Evan’s Right to Life Denied by Human Rights Court

Last updated on: March 30, 2018 at 6:12 pm   By Patty Knap

Yesterday (Wednesday ) the ironically named European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) denied Alfie Evan’s parents’ request to move him to a hospital that will actually provide care, rather than merely removing his life support. Alfie, now two years old, has a devastating degenerative brain disorder that has baffled physicians and specialists. Alfie has been a patient at England’s Alder Hey Childrens’ Hospital since December 2016. The hospital has asked the courts for authority to disconnect Alfie’s ventilator. Today on Facebook,  Alfie’s father Tom said personnel at the... Read more

Keeping the Easter Basket Catholic

Last updated on: March 28, 2018 at 12:27 pm   By Patty Knap

In the stores this week I’ve seen ready made Easter baskets overflowing with stuff.  All kinds of stuff and none of it having anything to do with Easter! These days you can buy a sports themed Easter basket, arts & crafts basket, hair accessories basket, a lego basket.  All with plenty of candy to be sure!  Fun, but none of it has anythung to do with the true meaning of Easter. I was talking to my good friend Diane,... Read more

Those with Special Needs or Disabilities Can Participate in the Church More Than Ever

Last updated on: June 6, 2018 at 6:10 pm   By Patty Knap

In the past few years, families with a member who has some form of disability have noticed an increasing array of outreaches for special needs. In my own parish, there’s now a monthly Mass planned especially for the special needs community.  Two other parishes near me offer the same on different weekends, and several parishes in the diocese now hold a “respite” evening of recreation for young adults with special needs.  This has been a great benefit for my... Read more

The Light is On for You: Get to Confession Before Easter

Last updated on: March 21, 2018 at 1:14 pm   By Patty Knap

Want to head into Easter with a clean slate? Now’s the time for Confession. The Light is On is a reconciliation initiative that began in the Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of Arlington, VA several years ago.  To encourage Catholics to come to or return to the beautiful source of mercy and peace – Confession – during Lent, all Catholic churches across the DC-VA area were open for quiet prayer and Confessions every Wednesday evening during Lent.  The Light is On... Read more

St. Joseph, Intercede for Fathers and for Children without Fathers

Last updated on: June 6, 2018 at 6:11 pm   By Patty Knap

I admit it. I’ve always kind of ignored St. Joseph.  He just wasn’t on my radar as a ‘go to’ saint. Joseph was a quiet man.  Yet the role he played was enormous as the foster or adoptive father of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. Not yet married to Mary, he was humble and obedient to the role chosen for him and announced to him in a dream. If we want to get to know someone who truly knew Jesus, St. Joseph... Read more
