New Children’s Book from the Sisters of Life Highlights Sacredness of Those with Special Needs

Last updated on: May 24, 2018 at 7:08 pm   By Patty Knap

In a world that has lost a sense of the unrepeatable beauty and sacredness of every human person, we need to be people with eyes that really see.  Children with special needs sometimes mean other people have to ‘look again’ to see that.   The Sisters of Life have written a charming new book for children, Look Again, Thomas!, that points us to the goodness in every person. Based on a real little boy named Angelo Pio, the story captures the way children with... Read more

Euthanasia Rejected on British Island of Guernsey

Last updated on: May 20, 2018 at 8:51 pm   By Patty Knap

The British Island of Guernsey refused to legalize assisted suicide by a vote of 24 to 14. This is incredible news, considering the resources that the powerful assisted suicide lobby invested into passing assisted suicide in Guernsey.  Assisted suicide proponents hoped Guernsey would be an “opening” to the legalization of assisted suicide throughout the UK. The island of Guernsey is located off the coast of Normandy and falls under the responsibility of the U.K.  Had the island passed the euthanasia measure, Guernsey would have been... Read more

Attorneys for Pro Life Counselors Respond to Attorney General Schneiderman’s Resignation

Last updated on: May 20, 2018 at 8:26 pm   By Patty Knap

Headlines accusing former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman of sexual harassment and assault, and his subsequent resignation, have generated response from many quarters, including the Thomas More Society (TMS) . The nonprofit national public interest law firm is currently defending a group of peaceful pro-life protesters in a federal harassment lawsuit brought against them by Schneiderman, in his former capacity as New York’s top law officer.  The outcome of the federal trial in New York is critical to the future... Read more

The Things We Put in the Casket

Last updated on: May 15, 2018 at 10:34 pm   By Patty Knap

A few weeks ago my pastor Msgr. Rick started his sermon with a small white card in his hand.  I assumed it was notes. He started talking about what we enjoy in our lives, the activities and hobbies and interests that are important to us and that we spend a lot of time on. “We priests do a lot of wakes and funerals, and I’ve seen all sorts of things go in the casket.”  He understood the natural impulse some people have to place... Read more

Praying for Ireland’s Eighth Amendment

Last updated on: May 15, 2018 at 10:26 pm   By Patty Knap

Despite the entire political class pushing for abortion by repeal of the Eighth Amendment, the polls are surprisingly close in Ireland, according to the Catholic Herald. Irish voters will be going to the polls on May 25 to decide whether to liberalise the country’s strict abortion laws. Leo Varadkar’s government is pushing strongly for a Yes vote in what will be a test of Ireland’s declining Catholic identity. The referendum concerns the proposed repeal of the Eighth Amendment of the... Read more

Everyday Mary, Our Mother

Last updated on: May 15, 2018 at 10:25 pm   By Patty Knap

This is such a charming image of Our Blessed Mother. It’s amazing it isn’t more well-known. I first saw this picture at a recent Marian retreat for women. Brother Joe Bellizzi, a Marianist, introduced it by telling us it hangs in his mother’s dining room and that he’s always been fond of it. Curious to know more about it, he did some research and learned that it’s called the “Polish Madonna” or “Mary’s Wash Day.” In such a beautiful way it... Read more

Sistine Chapel Choir Performs in NY, First Time in U.S. in 30 Years

Last updated on: May 20, 2018 at 8:21 pm   By Patty Knap

For the first time in 30 years, the Sistine Chapel Choir performed this week in NY.  It was a surprise performance for the guests of the Met Gala, an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Attendees were in awe with the joy and beauty of the Church conveyed through music. The choir’s performance hadn’t been announced in advance.  Those present at the May 7 Met Gala were astounded by this rare performance. This year the Met exhibition, which... Read more

Swiss Guard to Increase Its Ranks and Change Helmets

Last updated on: May 15, 2018 at 10:27 pm   By Patty Knap

The Vatican has 33 new Swiss Guards who took the ancient oath into the world’s oldest army.  They will begin wearing a new lighter weight, PVC helmet. Each is Swiss, under age 30, an upstanding Catholic, who pledges a minimum of two years to protecting the Pope. The Swiss Guard is preparing to expand its ranks by two dozen members to respond to increasing administrative demands while ensuring guards are not overworked. Commander of the Swiss Guard, Christoph Graf, told journalists May 4 that the... Read more

Iowa Bans Aborting Babies With a Heartbeat

Last updated on: May 15, 2018 at 10:29 pm   By Patty Knap

The unborn baby’s heart is beating by about the eighteenth day of pregnancy.  Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has just signed a historic bill that will ban aborting babies with a heartbeat.  This is now the strongest protection for preborn children in the U.S. This new law should be the rule, not the exception.  North Dakota and Arkansas passed similar heartbeat bills in previous years, but unfortunately, those bills were blocked by the courts. Governor Reynolds describes herself as “100 percent pro-life.”   “I’m pro-life. I’m... Read more
