The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple

Last updated on: February 25, 2019 at 7:00 am   By Ben Hartford

I'm so impatient. Sometimes, I'm like, "Look, Lord...I've changed. I mean, hey, I don't have to tell you that, though. Miright? Anyhow, I've changed. But I'm still waiting. Give me my mission. Oh, yeah, I know there's that same old mission, but I want my mission. The one that means I'm special. I'll wait. But I really think I've been waiting patiently for a long time now." Read more

Last updated on: February 24, 2019 at 6:30 am   By Ben Hartford

Huddled once more, the apostles hid in the Upper Room. The Lord had returned for 40 days, but now was gone again. His mother, whom he told would be their mother, tried to calm them, to reassure them, but their fear was great and their faith small. Read more

The Nativity of Christ

Last updated on: February 23, 2019 at 6:30 am   By Ben Hartford

And the angel said to them: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people.Luke 2:10 Fidelis Schabet, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons We are wretched. Floundering in our sin and hubris. God sent angels, floods, plagues, prophets, judges, kings, more prophets, and finally St. John The Baptist. Still, we persisted. Then the Heavenly Gloves came off and God’s very own (but way better) Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch Bethlehem was... Read more

The Crowning of Jesus with Thorns

Last updated on: February 22, 2019 at 6:30 am   By Ben Hartford

Even though they spat on him; laughed at him; beat him; mocked him; drove a crown of thorns into his brow; he died for them. Even though my gaze has fallen too long on women that are not my wife; even though I have stolen, lied, killed; even though I am a sinner among sinners; he died for me. And you. Read more

The Baptism of Jesus

Last updated on: February 21, 2019 at 6:30 am   By Ben Hartford

Satan surely thought he was foolish. St. John, the Baptist obviously thought himself unworthy. But the Father was well-pleased. The second Adam humbled himself to being baptized for sins he never committed. But also proved himself to be the Perfect Adam. Read more

Then he released to them Barabbas: and having scourged Jesus, delivered him unto them to be crucified.-Matthew 27:26 Then therefore Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons His flesh was torn from his back while his enemies looked on in derision. His Virgin Mother’s tears mixed with His Holy Blood on the floor. Every lash undeserved by Him. Every lash willingly absorbed for us.He was tired. Betrayed. Hungry. Lonely. Consubstantial? What?

Last updated on: February 18, 2019 at 6:00 pm   By Ben Hartford

Consubstantial comes from the Latin consubstantialis, which comes from the Greek homoousios, or “of one being”. It’s hard to understand how Jesus can be of one being and be begotten. But our un-perfected human minds don’t understand many things. Prayer and meditation can bring us closer to understanding, but from this sojourn on Earth, it will always be a mystery. Read more
