Faith and the Duty Work of Fathering
Last updated on: May 9, 2012 at 1:50 am By Jerry Park
When I teach sociology I usually think about daily life examples to stress the value of concepts in sociology, and it’s one of the reasons I enjoy blogging here, to test these examples and connect them to concepts. One of the big draws to sociology for me was the importance that good concepts can have in rethinking how our daily lives function. This is actually a key matter when we think about religion. Religion as a way to view reality,... Read more

Are University Professors Prejudiced against Evangelical Christians?
Last updated on: April 5, 2012 at 7:30 am By Bradley Wright
Here are some rather disturbing data from a study university professors in the United States. This study, conducted by the Institute for Jewish and Community Research of 1,269 college faculty members. Faculty were asked: “What are your overall feelings toward the following groups using a scale of 0-100, which goes from 100, very warm or favorable feeling, to 50, neutral, to 0, very cold or unfavorable?” Which religious group do college faculty feel most unfavorable toward? Evangelical Christians… by a lot.... Read more

Kony 2012 Tells Us What We Care About
Last updated on: May 9, 2012 at 1:51 am By Jerry Park
By Gerardo Marti An email showed up last week in my inbox with a brief subject heading, “Kony 2012.” It contained a simple message: a link to a 30 minute video with a note underneath, “Please share with all friends & family.” Clicking the link took me to a keenly edited film about an African military leader who had coerced hundreds of Ugandan boys into war. This was my introduction to what has become a national sensation. Kony 2012 is... Read more

Blue Sex: How it’s Different from Red Sex
Last updated on: April 3, 2012 at 10:38 am By Mark Regnerus
(Another clip from Premarital Sex in America…) Jeff is a freshman at a state university in Minnesota, a blue state. He’s an overachiever, very future focused, and gifted. He has had little trouble steering clear of temptation. But he doesn’t intend to always steer clear: “I’m not perfect, you know. I like to enjoy myself. I am at . . . the number-one party school, so I’m gonna have some fun.” Jeff has not had sex yet, which is in... Read more

Why Do We Go to Church?
Last updated on: March 10, 2012 at 6:10 am By Bradley Wright
Our own Richard Flory recently appeared on the illustrious Research on Religion podcast discussing why people go to church. Here’s the summary of his interview… check it out! A recent Barna Group survey found that roughly 60% of regular churchgoers could not remember any new religious insight from the last time they attended churc, and 50% could not remember any insight from the previous week’s service. So why bother gettin’ out of bed, gettin’ on your Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes and trudging... Read more

Small Enough to Hate: Anti-Muslim American Behavior
Last updated on: April 3, 2012 at 10:37 am By Jerry Park
I teach at a faith-based university, one that identifies itself as particularly Baptist and broadly Judeo-Christian. What this means exactly is often the subject of much debate, but it’s been clear to me after 8 years of teaching that this identity is not a requirement of the students. Based on student self-report this past Fall there were 74 Buddhist, 98 Hindu, and 117 Muslim students out of 12,575 undergrads. It’s not much but these numbers are large enough for student... Dear China: Why Censor? Why Suppress Religion?
Last updated on: April 3, 2012 at 10:36 am By Bradley Wright
by Becky Hsu A new book written by a former CNN journalist in Beijing, Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle for Internet Freedom, documents how the Chinese government has been surprisingly successful at managing the flow of information online during the past ten years. Why the Chinese government spends so much effort on controlling information (i.e., censorship) is certainly perplexing, and we may be tempted to give a deceptively straightforward answer: they want to stay in power, and dissenting voices... Religious Freedom: Why Now? Defending an Embattled Human Right
Last updated on: April 2, 2012 at 10:36 am By Margarita A. Mooney
A public event on March 1, 2012, hosted by Georgetown University’s Berkely Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs launched the monograph Religious Freedom: Why Now? Defending an Embattled Human Right, authored by Timothy Shah under the auspices of the Witherspoon Institute’s Task Force on International Religious Freedom. At this event, Princeton political science Professor Robert George quoted extensively from Martin Luther King’s Letters from the Birmingham Jail to illustrate why religious freedom deserves legal protection. In the Birmingham letters,... Read more

Burning of the Quran
Last updated on: April 5, 2012 at 7:31 am By Bradley Wright
by Amy Reynolds On February 20th, burned copies of the Quran were discovered at the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. The U.S. military admitted that they were responsible for not disposing of the books properly. In the wake of the incident, President Obama sent a formal apology to President Karzai and the people of Afghanistan; General John Allen (commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan) phoned Karzai to express regret as well. In our highly polarized political... Read more

Red Sex
Last updated on: April 5, 2012 at 7:32 am By Mark Regnerus
(This is an excerpt from my 2011 book Premarital Sex in America…) Martin was a 19-year-old from Virginia when our research team spoke with him for the second time. He had tried college but had dropped out after a year. It just wasn’t for him. Instead, he settled comfortably back into his working-class roots, becoming an electrician. By ignoring the popular narrative that said he needed a college education to successfully navigate life, Martin had found his niche. And a... Read more
