The Religious Non-Christian Diaspora

Last updated on: June 13, 2012 at 11:00 am   By Jerry Park

In my continuing research over Asian American diversity, one of the recurring issues is religious diversity. I blogged earlier that Asian Americans are the least Christian of all racial groups in the US. About 46% of those who are Asian American are either Protestant or Catholic according to multilingual surveys. So the other 54% are a combination of non-Christian religions and those who say they have “no religion” (which is a tricky issue when we talk to Asian Americans). Of... Read more

Ritual and Routine in Everyday Life & Faith

Last updated on: May 31, 2012 at 7:31 am   By Bradley Wright

Over the weekend I did my laundry, as is my custom, and it took my about 30 minutes of actual work—loading, advancing, and putting away. But, let’s say I wanted to do it 150 years ago; that would be a very different story. Most households set aside a full day for laundry, usually a Monday, and the poor person doing it (read: housewife) would spend the whole day soaking, pounding, rubbing, boiling, starching, rinsing, and drying clothes and linens. It... Read more

Sexual Expectations and Realities in Marriage

Last updated on: May 26, 2012 at 12:00 pm   By Mark Regnerus

Who out there thinks they’re having too much sex? The answer appears to be: nearly no one (under age 40, that is). Analyses involving new nationally-representative data on 18-39-year-olds, results from which I’ve highlighted in previous blog posts, suggests that very few young adults in America think they themselves are oversexed. Respondents were asked, “Are you content with the amount of sex you are having?” To which 50 percent replied “yes,” 43 percent said, “no, I’d prefer more,” and only... Read more

Poverty and the “Model Minority”

Last updated on: June 13, 2012 at 11:01 am   By Jerry Park

As Asian Pacific American Heritage Month draws to a close during this election year, I wanted to draw attention to the issue of poverty as it remains quite significant in light of the recent recession. Believe it or not, poverty is a real issue for Asian Americans. I write this with the understanding that many Americans hold to an onerous stereotype sometimes described as the model minority myth.   The myth asserts that certain minorities are so exemplary in their... Read more

Religious Affiliation and the Frequency of Orgasms

Last updated on: May 24, 2012 at 10:44 am   By Bradley Wright

A apropos of nothing, here are some data about religion and sex. They come from the National Health and Social Life Survey (NHSLS). This study, was conducted by Edward Laumann, of the University of Chicago, in 1994, so it’s getting a bit old, but it remains a great study on the topic. It collected data from 3,400+ people nationwide on just about every aspect of sexual behavior. Fortunately, for my purposes, it also collected data on religious affiliation. From the NHSLS, here are... Read more

Three Things I Love about Teaching Sociology of Religion Online

Last updated on: May 22, 2012 at 1:08 pm   By Margarita A. Mooney

Part 3 in a Series on Teaching Sociology of Religion Online. Here I am again, spending my “free” time thinking how much I love teaching sociology of religion online. I’m relaxing at home, with my new MacBook Air on my lap, which is charging my Iphone, and listening to a podcast from Professor Anthony Gill’s Research on Religion Podcast series on my iPad. (FYI…I turned off my 4th Apple product–my iPod–so I can hear the Podcast on my iPad). First,... Read more

The Centrality of Sex and the Failure of Unstable Relationships

Last updated on: May 19, 2012 at 10:49 pm   By Mark Regnerus

[An excerpt from Premarital Sex in America: How Young Americans Meet, Mate, and Think about Marrying] Why do so many emerging-adult sexual relationships fail? Reasons of course are manifold, and for many it’s simply part of the script of sex, college (for some), and the natural course of modern relationships. Relationships fail, then, because at some point they’re supposed to. Sex columnist Dan Savage reminds his readers that “every relationship fails until one doesn’t.” While certainly true at face value,... Read more

The Ups and Downs of Teaching Sociology of Religion OnLine

Last updated on: May 21, 2012 at 9:17 pm   By Margarita A. Mooney

Part 2 in a Series on Teaching Sociology of Religion Online. I’ve just finished my first week of a hybrid in-person/online course in sociology of religion to undergraduates at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Of four days we met this week, two times we met in class, one day I assigned a video and a podcast, and the fourth day we met synchronously (at the same time) for a short lecture and class discussion. Thus far, my experience... Read more

Self-Selection into Situations and Church

Last updated on: May 18, 2012 at 6:32 am   By Bradley Wright

In the past few years, I’ve started to notice just how often I choose to be in situations that have a lot of other people like me (age, gender, social class, etc….) I don’t think that I consciously choose to do so, rather how I express my interests in the context of the constraints and opportunities of my life end up being similar to how other people with similar interests, opportunities, and constraints do. An easy example, I usually go... Read more

Asian Americans on the Move

Last updated on: June 13, 2012 at 12:09 pm   By Jerry Park

I recently had a chance to see the new Avengers movie and one of the characters, Tony Stark mentioned that he had a hankering for shawarma. And that made me think: “Yeah some shawarma would be pretty good. Hmm, I could sure go for some Indian food right now too. Hey when was the last time I had it? Sigh.) You see, I had returned to an old realization. After having lived in Waco, Texas for almost 8 years now,... Read more
