Mercy Without End

Last updated on: March 15, 2021 at 3:51 pm   By Billy Kangas

“One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be well?” The sick man answered him, ‘Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me.’ Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up... Read more

A Vision of Hope

Last updated on: March 14, 2021 at 12:57 pm   By Billy Kangas

“Thus says the LORD: Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. Instead there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create.” Is 65:17-18 Do you ever peek at the end of the book you’re reading? It can be tempting, particularly when there’s a lot of tension or mystery. I’ll confess, I’ve sometimes looked ahead. In today’s passage, God offers a... Read more

God Beyond the Either/Or

Last updated on: March 12, 2021 at 5:54 pm   By Billy Kangas

The world is full of “either/or” scenarios. We’re told that we need to choose between a limited number of options. Do you like Chocolate or Vanilla? Android or Apple? Taking a bath or a shower? Being a passenger or driver? Are you a Democrat or Republican? Do you prefer a pen or a pencil? I could go on. In today’s passage, Jesus has been given an either/or question. He’s asked if a blind man’s condition was caused by his own... Read more

Spring Renewal

Last updated on: March 12, 2021 at 4:18 pm   By Billy Kangas

“Let us know, let us strive to know the LORD, as certain as the dawn is his coming, and his judgment shines forth like the light of day! He will come to us like the rain, like spring rain that waters the earth.” Hosea 6:3 Today crosses the halfway point in Lent between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Lent emerged in the church out of a need to take time to step back and clear a path for God to work. Hopefully,... Read more

Saint Maximilian of Tebessa – The Courage on Conscience

Last updated on: March 12, 2021 at 5:07 pm   By Billy Kangas

Saint Maximilian of Tebessa was an African saint from the third century. When he was compelled to enlist in the Roman army his conscience would not allow him to swear allegiance to the emperor. As a result, he was beheaded. He is the first documented conscientious objector but he would not be the last. Indeed, the Order of Maximilian, a group of anti-war clergy formed in the 1970s took their name from him and were inspired by his example. May God... Read more

Life in the Key of Love

Last updated on: March 11, 2021 at 5:47 pm   By Billy Kangas

“Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Mk 12:29-31 Human life requires us to be a lot more like jazz musicians than classically trained musicians. We don’t get a... Read more

St. Óengus of Tallaght – Praying from One’s Place

Last updated on: March 11, 2021 at 1:02 pm   By Billy Kangas

Does where you pray each day matter? St. Óengus of Tallaght is a great mystical saint of Ireland from the ninth century. From his early years on, he dedicated much of his life to prayer and writing. He chose to move into remote places near Irish rivers. This helped him form a spiritual practice that was deeply rooted in his place. Each day he would pray through the whole Psalter. Fifty he would pray in his cell, fifty he would... Read more

God’s Voice in Unexpected Places

Last updated on: March 10, 2021 at 8:04 pm   By Billy Kangas

“Thus says the LORD: This is what I commanded my people: Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk-in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper.” Jer 7:23 Do you know the voice of God? One of the biggest hindrances to hearing God’s voice is when we make the assumption that we have it all figured out already. In today’s passage, Jerimiah confronts this very problem.... Read more

John Ogilvie – A Witness to Faith

Last updated on: March 10, 2021 at 3:32 pm   By Billy Kangas

How much does speaking about Jesus mean to you? John Ogilvie is the only post-reformation Catholic saint from Scotland. Born a Presbyterian, converted to Catholicism as a teenager and soon became a Jesuit. He returned to his homeland and was eventually executed because of his instance of proclaiming his faith to others. His death was marked by signs of how dearly he was rooted in a life of prayer. As he spoke to the crowd at his execution he asked... Read more

The Call to Obedience

Last updated on: March 9, 2021 at 3:26 pm   By Billy Kangas

“Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.” Mt 5:19   What is your spiritual life rooted in? It could be a daily time of prayer, going to church, looking to the examples of men and women of faith before you, spiritual disciplines like fasting, what you... Read more
