A Psalm for Beleaguered

Last updated on: August 20, 2025 at 12:48 pm   By Billy Kangas

I’ve been sitting with Psalm 91 this week—a psalm of profound power and promise. For millennia, people of faith have turned to it in times of trial, seeking God’s protection amid life’s tribulations. Some scholars connect it to ancient Israelite warfare, suggesting it may have been recited before battle. Targumic traditions from the time of Christ link it to David and a blessing spoken over Solomon. Whatever its precise origins, Psalm 91 has become a cornerstone of Christian prayer and... Read more

Weekly Roundup: Attentive to Grace

Last updated on: August 1, 2025 at 3:25 pm   By Billy Kangas

Happy Friday, friends! As the week winds down, I wanted to share a few highlights, insights, and sparks of grace that lit up my journey these past few days. We marked the feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola with a powerful conversation on Ave Maria in the Afternoon, where Marcus Peter and I explored how Ignatian spirituality invites us to move toward what is broken—both in the world around us and within the hidden contours of our hearts. Whether it’s... Read more

Grace in the Wounds – St. Ignatius’s way of Leadership

Last updated on: August 1, 2025 at 10:44 am   By Billy Kangas

What lessons did failure teach you that success never could? Today, the Church celebrates one of the most influential figures in Catholic history: St. Ignatius of Loyola. Five hundred years ago, Ignatius was undergoing a personal transformation that would become a cornerstone for Catholic missions, spirituality, education, and service. His legacy has shaped countless lives—including my own. When we consider the leadership lessons from Ignatius’s life, the examples are staggering. Yet one of his greatest gifts to us is the... Read more

Reclaiming Love on the Jersey Shore

Last updated on: July 21, 2025 at 6:54 pm   By Billy Kangas

I came across Carter Sherman’s recent article “These gen Zers preach ‘chastity before marriage’ at the Jersey shore. What are they so afraid of?” in The Guardian profiling members of Generation Life, a Catholic group advocating for chastity at the Jersey Shore. The headline immediately caught my attention—but so did the ways it misunderstood key concepts. I think this points in some key ways to how our culture approaches relationships, sex, and the human vocation to love. The headline misuses... Read more

Tears that Point to Heaven

This week I was able to attend the funeral of Xavier Randolph, who is the 18 year old young man who drowned in lake Michigan last week. His family is near and dear to many, I am sure, and this loss is heartbreak. Xavier was very involved with the work of Pine Hills Boys Camp and the community of men surrounding that. As a former camper, counselor, and father of a camper myself, this loss has touched not only myself... Read more

The Spirituality of Taillights

Last updated on: July 1, 2025 at 2:06 pm   By Billy Kangas

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on what I might call the spirituality of taillights. For much of my life, I’ve focused on cultivating the spirituality of headlights. That is—the desire to discern where I’m going. Headlight spirituality is rooted in faith and hope: a belief that if you cling to the right vision, trust God’s promises, and stay attuned to His activity, you’ll be able to navigate your life’s direction—and at times, help guide those journeying with you. This is a... Read more

Weekly Roundup – Acton U, Photorealism & Resilience

Last updated on: June 27, 2025 at 8:01 pm   By Billy Kangas

This week was marked in great part by my first trip to Acton University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a nearly week-long conference exploring the intersection of economics, spirituality, and culture. I was deeply inspired by many of the conversations I had. Economics is a field I admittedly have little expertise in, but I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with people who are taking it seriously while earnestly pursuing the journey of faith. My main takeaway centered on themes of culture and personhood.... Read more

Not Grand, But Great: Legacy Through the Little Things

Last updated on: June 23, 2025 at 9:25 am   By Billy Kangas

True legacy grows: not through grand gestures, but through faithful, personal investment in others. Here’s one story that demonstrates this, but first a little context. The Salesians are a religious congregation inspired by the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales and founded by St. John Bosco in the late 19th century. They are dedicated to the education and evangelization of youth, especially the poor and marginalized, and have left a rich and enduring spiritual heritage. Yet one man—deeply honored by... Read more

Hallowed be Thy Life

Last updated on: June 20, 2025 at 9:47 am   By Billy Kangas

This week, I’ve been reflecting deeply on the first petition of the Lord’s Prayer: “Hallowed be thy name.” At first glance, it seems like a strange request. After all, God’s name is already eternally and infinitely holy. Why would we need to ask for it to be hallowed? Saint Cyprian addressed this in one of his treatises. He wrote that we do not pray for God’s name to become holy—as though our prayers could confer holiness upon the Holy One.... Read more

The Billionaire Rift

Last updated on: June 9, 2025 at 2:13 pm   By Billy Kangas

I recently posted an article at Millennial about the growing rift between Elon Musk and Donald Trump. My argument is that this is just the latest example in a long trend of billionaires wielding power from a place of personal vendetta, private interest, or other individual motives—often with a wild disregard for the consequences of their actions. As many have done, I’ve been reflecting on the legacy of Pope Leo XIII, whose teachings have inspired Pope Leo XIV, particularly through... Read more
