The Plains Truth

Last updated on: April 13, 2023 at 12:36 pm   By Ben Witherington

It was a bucket list thing.  I had always wanted to visit Plains Georgia, the home of President Jimmy Carter.  Sadly, I did not get there until he was already in Hospice care last month with TV crews hanging around like vultures, waiting for him to die.  Jimmy Carter, as many have said, has been the best ex-President we’ve ever had.  Not only has the Carter Center been at the center of negotiating all sorts of conflict resolutions, something for... Read more

The Beach at Ponte Vedra

Last updated on: March 21, 2023 at 10:36 pm   By Ben Witherington

I’m not a fan of Florida beaches in general. For one thing, the beaches on the gulf, while they may have nice sand, are not beaches on the ocean.  Most of the time the Gulf is just a big hot tub— no real waves and so no body surfing or board surfing either. Boring.  For another thing its much too hot in the middle of the summer to really enjoy the beach. For a third thing, the erosion on the... Read more

The Boys from Biloxi

Last updated on: March 21, 2023 at 12:58 pm   By Ben Witherington

John Grisham is clearly the king of American legal thrillers.  He has no equals.   Returning once more to his home state of Mississippi which he knows so well (though he has lived in Charlottesville Va. for many years),  Grisham shines a light on the seamy underbelly of the Dixie Mafia located along the coast.  In some ways this novel reminds me when I was young and used to pull up the colorful plastic doormat on the front porch, only to... Read more

The Jesus Revolution

Last updated on: March 24, 2023 at 8:25 am   By Ben Witherington

The real Jesus Revolution happened in A.D. 30 when Jesus rose from the dead, and changed all of subsequent world history, including the history of Western Europe and then America.  But this movie helpfully chronicles the story of Calvary Church (home of the early Christian band Love Song with Chuck Girard, a band I loved in the 70s), and how it became the Mecca for the hippies who were turning to Christ.  The movie is well done, and if that... Read more

Zoos are for the Beasts

Last updated on: March 20, 2023 at 5:45 pm   By Ben Witherington

There are all sorts of beasts at the Jacksonville zoo, including faux beasts…. like this, made out of ancient cellphones no less. The baby giraffe said he wanted a cookie, but instead he got a lettuce leaf—- boring!  Most of the animals were pretty sedentary, except of course the otters at feeding time who were going nuts, swimming jumping up towards the feeder etc.   A complete contrast to the capybara who was just slowly munching away.    This reminded me... Read more

The Crucified Christ

Last updated on: March 24, 2023 at 10:41 pm   By Ben Witherington

Moses’ snake on a pole, on Mt. Nebo, check the Johannine text at the podium of the statue. It may seem strange, as many people as the Romans crucified in the first century A.D., including a good number of Christians, but the death of Christ on the cross has caused more problems for non-Christians, for instance many Muslims, and Jehovah Witnesses, than the resurrection of Jesus.  Good Friday is the appropriate day to reflect on these things... Read more

Zoos are for the Birds

Last updated on: March 20, 2023 at 5:30 pm   By Ben Witherington

The Jacksonville Zoo is a bird sanctuary among other things. And there are many colorful fowl to inspect. I wanted to try out my new Samsung Galaxy 23+ Ultra with its ultra good camera.  Well you can judge the results for yourself.  Amazing telephoto lens, because you can’t get anywhere near some of these flighty creatures.  It was a nice day in March when we went there, and we walked through Africa, Asia, Australia etc.  Afterwards, I wished I had... Read more

The Bird Park near Ponte Vedra

Last updated on: March 24, 2023 at 9:14 am   By Ben Witherington

Yes, we confess to being nature lovers, including both flora and fauna, both flowers and beasts, so naturally we visited the Bird Park near where we were staying.  The occasion for Ann and I to go South was that my sister and my wife have birthdays close together, March 8th and 13th, so we rendezvoused in Jacksonville and went to the beach, and the Players golf tourney. We also took a bunch of side trips.  One was too the Bird... Read more

Is Silence Golden?

Last updated on: March 15, 2023 at 6:30 am   By Ben Witherington

One of the odder aspects of the history of Christianity is some aspects of monasticism, for example, the complete withdrawal from the world coupled with the vow of silence. I was once sitting in the gift shop at Gethsemane abbey (my mother was inspecting their delicious bourbon fudge) near Bardstown Ky. and I was sitting next to one of the older Trappist monks who lived at the abbey. Suddenly he started speaking to me, which startled me because I had... Read more
