Holidays or Holy Days

Last updated on: December 6, 2023 at 9:35 am   By Ben Witherington

The very term holiday is in fact a mash up of the words holy day.  But what has happened to our holy days is they have been over-run with commercialism, cartoon characters,  and frankly a brief spurt of compassion for our fellow human beings who are less fortunate than we are, especially those in war torn places like Ukraine or Gaza or Israel.  In reflecting on this situation I’ve written various Christmas poems, and here is the shortest among them….... Read more

The Bonding

Last updated on: December 4, 2023 at 12:02 pm   By Ben Witherington

THE BONDING     A cold and listless season, And full of cheerless cheer, When hopes are raised and dashed again And joy dissolves in tears.   The search for endless family The search for one true Friend Leaves questers tired, disconsolate With questions without end.   Best find some potent pleasure quick Some superficial thrill Than search for everlasting love When none can fill that bill.   So hide yourselves in shopping And eating ‘til you burst, Use endless... Read more

Creatures of Habit

Last updated on: December 4, 2023 at 12:15 pm   By Ben Witherington

CREATURES OF HABIT   Creatures of habit, Day after day Go about life, The same old way.   Nothing disturbs Their orderly routine All must be neat, And all must be clean.   They’re making their lists And checking them twice, Trying to make sure Their work will suffice.   Impatient by nature They don’t suffer fools Gladly or otherwise Because of the rules.   A place for everything For all there’s a place Don’t touch the guest towels But... Read more

Napoleon — an Epic with Epic scope

Last updated on: December 1, 2023 at 8:48 pm   By Ben Witherington

There are frankly not enough historical movies like this one in the theaters these days, and we are the losers for that. Napoleon Bonaparte who began life in Corsica and ended in exile twice over on islands (Elba then St. Helena) was a complex human being.   He loved France, he loved Josephine and he loved the army and the art of war, which he was very good at.  Of some 86 battles he won 70 some of them. Ridley Scott... Read more

The Riverwalk–Part Three

Last updated on: December 1, 2023 at 8:48 am   By Ben Witherington

There are other interesting things to see on the Riverwalk, which in fact, like the San Antonio river winds all over the place….. this schematic will give you an idea about the river itself. Here below is a sculpture about a cattle drive nearby. (think Lonesome Dove). And here is a grandfather of cyprus trees, which is surely older than the state of Texas itself….. On the banks of the Riverwalk there are both live and artificial plants which look... Read more

Remember the Alamo– Part Two

Last updated on: December 1, 2023 at 8:51 am   By Ben Witherington

The historic site of the Alamo is well maintained but the first impression it leaves on you how very small the mission turned fort really is, both outside and in, but one may forget this was once a small Spanish mission building. We have persons outside, dressed in uniforms of the period (notice how much they resemble Confederacy uniforms except for the hats– not surprising since it was mostly southerner who fought the battle of the Alamo, some with the... Read more

Remember the Alamo?– Part One

Last updated on: December 1, 2023 at 8:06 am   By Ben Witherington

Perhaps the major historical tourist attraction in all of south Texas is the Alamo, even though it is a monument to defeat rather than victory.  Only a short walk from our hotel, it was worth seeing again and remembering.  My own childhood memories of the place, which I have visited several times was nonetheless colored by seeing the big budget Hollywood film which was released in 1960 and starred and was directed by ‘Duke’ aka John Wayne who plays Davy... Read more
