Last updated on: August 17, 2024 at 6:04 am   By Ben Witherington

They all say they’ve got the Holy Grail. So who’s right? By Julia Buckley, CNN  12 minute read Published 5:00 AM EDT, Sat August 17, 2024 on the CNN website Jesus is often depicted at the Last Supper with a cup, as depicted here by Frans Pourbus the Younger, in a painting at the Louvre. Frans II Pourbus/Gianni Dagli Orti/Shutterstock CNN —  Wherever you go, the experience is usually the same. You enter a church or a cathedral, and an ecclesiastical hush... Read more

The N.C. Aquarium– Part Six

Last updated on: August 7, 2024 at 1:38 pm   By Ben Witherington

There is much more to see on the two floors of the aquarium.  It’s not as large as the one in Atlanta, but it’s well worth seeing. And if you leave the aquarium through the exit from the gift shop, you might just find this…   Read more

The N.C. Aquarium– Part Five

Last updated on: August 7, 2024 at 1:16 pm   By Ben Witherington

There are lots of excellent signs in the aquarium to help orient folks on what they are seeing. There are cute little turtles that children allowed to touch… And they can learn about lily pads and sea anemones too . But the weird award goes to the corn snake which they have in a cage in the aquarium.  Why?  He doesn’t belong in an aquarium. Read more

So they actually have not just regular gators (and not from Gainsville), but special ones– an albino gator.   And if that’s not enough to put you off your lunch, there are poison dart frogs, that look beautiful but are deadly…. Were that not enough… jaws shows up.  Here are the teeth from a great white, or is it Jonah’s whale? Read more

The N.C. Aquarium– Part Three

Last updated on: August 7, 2024 at 12:49 pm   By Ben Witherington

There are of course many other sorts of fish at the Aquarium…. And yes there are predator sharks who eat them as well….. Yes they have a hammer head, and then this guy above smiling for the camera.   There are also rays or skates… This guy could have come out of my creek in my backyard,  but not the guys below. It takes a lot of maintenance to keep these tanks clean… and healthy for the fish. They’ve even made... Read more

Ah Nemo. Well he’s not hard to find in this aquarium, in fact he and his cousins are all there.  And there are plenty of other colorful fish to see as well, in these well constructed artificial reefs…   And there’s a fish that wins the best Halloween costume award… see if you can remember the name of this one…. The idea that all this variety and colors of fish could just happen by an impersonal abstract process called natural... Read more

The N.C. Aquarium– Part One

Last updated on: August 7, 2024 at 10:18 am   By Ben Witherington

Way out beyond Carolina and Kurie Beaches is a road to nowhere, well the end of this part of N.C. where Fort Fisher once was.  What’s there now is a very nice aquarium which has been getting continual upgrades over the years.  So, though we visited this many years ago, it bore another look, especially since, our relatives thought it was spiffy to have their wedding there, but that’s a story for another day.   The Museum is not large, and... Read more

The Exchange— the Latest Grisham Thriller

Last updated on: July 24, 2024 at 4:37 pm   By Ben Witherington

If you are old enough to remember a novel called The Firm, which lets you millenials out, since it showed up in 1991, only the second lawyer thriller by John Grisham (a Time to Kill) being the first, then this provides a long over due sequel. But it stands on its own well too, as the continuing saga of Mitch and Abby McDeere, from good ole Kentucky.  Grisham must have some kind of record for having more than 20 novels... Read more

Death on the Tiber– Lindsey Davis

Last updated on: July 19, 2024 at 9:28 pm   By Ben Witherington

Lindsey Davis is now the most prolific of all the novelists who focus is on ancient Rome, and that is saying something, considering we are also talking about Colleen McCullough,  Stephen Saylor,  and Robert Harris to mention a few.  There are now an even dozen novels about the sleuth Flavia Albia, adopted daughter of Falco, and counting.  I did not much care for the first of the novels in the series as it portrayed Flavia anachronistically as some sort of... Read more
