The Verbum Collection

Last updated on: September 4, 2024 at 4:09 pm   By Ben Witherington

Overview Ben Witherington III, a well-known New Testament scholar, exegete, and commentator brings new insight to several oft-debated areas of Christian doctrine and methods of interpretation with the Ben Witherington III Collection (5 vols.). In this collection, Witherington opens the Scriptures and addresses the following subjects: The Bible: the formation of its canon, history of its translations, hermeneutical principles, and more Communion: its background, significance, and complexities Protestant Reformers: whether Luther, Calvin, or Wesley’s ideas on various topics— sin, sovereignty,... Read more

Part of the attraction is the riot of colors, including the costumes. But the inanimate props are equally interesting…. But in the end, the interaction between the humans and the objects was the real attraction…. Read more

The Greek Old Testament?

Last updated on: September 4, 2024 at 1:45 pm   By Ben Witherington

I was reading away in a book entitled The Bible in Greek Christian Antiquity which is a translation of some essays originally in French, with the first of the essays about the Septuagint by Paul Lamarche.  In this essay he stresses that of course the Septuagint is not in its origins a Christian collection of translations of the Hebrew OT, plus some added material, but rather a Jewish creation, with the first part, namely the translation of the Pentateuch likely completed... Read more

Cirque du Soleil— OVO! Part One

Last updated on: August 31, 2024 at 10:21 pm   By Ben Witherington

I’ve seen the Circque before in Chicago, but not this show, and this one was miles better than the Chicago one.  Spectacular acrobatics, a climbing wall, lots of enjoyable music and singing, colorful costumes— and a theme, in this case OVO i.e. eggs.  Oh did I mention bugs— including a rather portly ladybug playing hard to get….  The show was about 2 hours long with a 20 minute intermission. Here’s some fun shots from the show which we saw the... Read more

Mysterium

Last updated on: August 28, 2024 at 9:30 am   By Ben Witherington

MYSTERIUM   They say it is a ‘mystery’ A puzzle in a phrase But is it revelation Which always will amaze?   They find the ‘mystery’ lacking Clear diction and quite plain And if it causes pondering They’re going to complain.   Where is the love of eloquence In form and substance too Must discourse be plebian In order to get through?   Not all things in the Bible Are clear to one and all And when the truth’s apparent... Read more

John Barton’s The Word

Last updated on: August 31, 2024 at 11:34 am   By Ben Witherington

This is, without question, one of the most erudite and at the same time accessible, surveys of the dilemmas that translators face in translating the Bible, not only into English but into many other languages as well.  The Bible is of course the most sold, the most bought, the most translated work in all of human history– by a lot.  It behooves all Christians who care about the Bible to know something about how it came to be put... Read more
