The Problem with Christian Nationalism at Christmas

Last updated on: December 24, 2025 at 10:22 am   By Ben Witherington

The Church Tour of Back Bay– Part One

Last updated on: December 19, 2025 at 10:23 am   By Ben Witherington

The Society of Biblical Studies provides wonderful tours of churches each year in the city that is hosting, and in this case it was Boston. The next few posts will be of some of these churches, beginning with the Old South Church, which while founded and located elsewhere in 1720, was moved much more recently once the Back Bay was filled up with dirt from Needham down the road,  That whole area is built on water, then logs, then sand... Read more

The Lasalette Shrine in Attleboro. Part One

Last updated on: December 19, 2025 at 9:31 am   By Ben Witherington

Over the holidays, Ann and I went to Attleboro to visit her sister Elaine and her brother-in-law Bobby. Besides having a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner, we took a little ride just down the road to the Lasalette shrine which has an amazing assortment of Nativity sets  from around the world, as well as outdoor Christians lights galore. This post highlights the former plus the statues outside, the next post will highlight the lights.   Read more

Tomb Raiders– an Incredible Tomb in Turkey

Last updated on: December 19, 2025 at 8:46 am   By Ben Witherington

Turkey is a treasure trove of archaeological sites, and the thing is there are probably as many good ones under the ground as above ground.  There is far more of relevance to the study of the Bible than in any of the other Lands of the Bible including Israel.  Why?  Because in Turkey we have OT sites in the far east, and everywhere have Greco-Roman sites, also ANE sites like Hattusha, early Christian sites and much more.  This tomb found... Read more

The Surprises Just Keep on Coming!

Last updated on: December 16, 2025 at 11:37 am   By Ben Witherington

Here a few more things need to be said to make sense of what we have just witnessed—namely material found nowhere in the Synoptic Gospels. What we need to notice is that actually the Farewell discourse begins at Jn. 13.31 after the departure of Judas, and by all appearances at the same venue as the meal in John 13, which means at the BD’s house. This is so until we get to Jn.14.31 where Jesus says ‘its time for us... Read more

Surprise! John is not the Beloved Disciple

Last updated on: December 16, 2025 at 11:08 am   By Ben Witherington

WHO IS THE BELOVED DISCIPLE, AND WHY IS THE GOSPEL ATTRIBUTED TO A MAN NAMED JOHN?   While the issue of authorship has been debated throughout church history, and bearing in mind that the header of this Gospel was only added after the fact when the Gospels were combined into one codex, and there was need for the distinctions— ‘according to John’, ‘according to Mark’ etc. In other words, the caption on the fourth Gospel is not part of the... Read more
