Methodist Breakthrough in Bristol– Part Two
Last updated on: October 8, 2026 at 10:21 am By Ben Witherington
This became not merely a preaching house, but a temporary residence for John and Charles, with a bedroom and a study of sorts. Here’s an early drawing of this meeting house. Today the downstairs looks like this… And the upstairs looks like this.. In an age before electricity, natural light, fire light, or candle light was all they had, and the indoor preaching usually transpired after people finished work, which is to say in the evening. In addition to these... Read more

Methodist Breakthrough in Bristol–Part One
Last updated on: October 8, 2026 at 9:32 am By Ben Witherington
Without question, Bristol was a crucial city for the Methodist movement. And really it started in 1739 when George Whitefield introduced John Wesley to ‘field preaching’, in this case at Hanham Mount, which Whitefield had preached at before. The crowd that gathered consisted of colliers (coal miners) the poor and the uneducated, with an estimated crowd of 3,000. In his journey Wesley said that Whitefield had pointed to the Sermon on the Mount as a ‘rather remarkable precedent for field... Read more

Roman Bath(s)– Part Three
Last updated on: October 8, 2026 at 8:30 am By Ben Witherington
The more one studies this site, the more one realize it was mainly a religious site, and only secondarily a bath, with the bath serving not just cleansing purposes but medicinal ones. Here is a drawing of what the full site would have looked like… Not just one or two temples, but a whole temple precinct, which included a temple for the premiere healing deity Romans turned to— Asclepius. Unlike Unlike curse tablets, there were also requests to the... Read more

Roman Bath(s)–Part 2
Last updated on: October 8, 2026 at 6:47 am By Ben Witherington
The Museum under and around the Roman Bath is excellent and well worth a visit. We will consider some artifacts in this and the next post. In fact the Bath was connected to a Temple of Minerva, so there was a religious connection to this bath. Here is a drawing of what the bath would have looked like. The religious connection explains why so many curse formulae written on soft metal were found here. Romans would write out a curse,... Read more

Roman Bath(s)– Part One
Last updated on: October 7, 2026 at 10:19 pm By Ben Witherington
Certainly the main tourist attraction in Bath is the ancient Roman bath complex. In Roman times the city was called Aquae Sulis. It is possible that Constantine, later to be both Emperor and a Christian of sorts was here in the late third century A.D.. Here are some shots of the Roman Bath complex from the outside… To orient ourselves a couple of maps will help us. This complex can actually be dated to the first century A.D. due... Read more

Bath Abbey
Last updated on: October 7, 2026 at 1:46 pm By Ben Witherington
Bath is a town that goes all the way back to Roman times, and had a very different name then, as we shall see, but today it is named after the hot spring Roman bath which is in the center of town and draws tourists and locals alike, to see what Roman leisure culture was like. The town for more than a century and a half has been famous for its Georgian architecture dating to the 18th century, for instance…... Read more

Beautiful Bath
Last updated on: October 7, 2026 at 9:39 pm By Ben Witherington
Bath is a beautiful city in many ways, not the least of which is the quaint downtown narrow street with interesting shops, like the Shambles in York. And of course there are numerous pubs (i.e. Public Houses) and restaurants. One of the most common and popular names for a pub is The Red Lion (for instance in Epworth and London) But the pubs in Bath are more distinctive instead of being a chain for instance if you go down the... Westminster Abbey– Part Three
Last updated on: October 7, 2026 at 9:35 am By Ben Witherington
There are many more novelists, poets, playwrights and actors in poet’s corner these days, and here are just some of them… An Abbey should be a place where you look up to God, not look down to see what famous humans have died, but in this Abbey, you have to do both. So when you look up, here is what you see. When you are finished causing a crick in your neck, and you look down again, there are many... Read more

Westminister Abbey– Part Two
Last updated on: October 7, 2026 at 8:45 am By Ben Witherington
One can get either depressed or impressed by walking around on the top of the names and dates of famous writers, musicians, politicians whom you have admired but whom now are all dead. I will give pride of place to a person who has most influenced me….. I love the quote on it: “I believe in Christianity like I believe in the sun, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” Below is another... Read more

Westminster Abbey– Part One
Last updated on: October 6, 2026 at 10:16 pm By Ben Witherington
In one sense walking into Westminster Abbey is like walking down the Hollywood walk of fame, although these folks are far more important than movie stars in Hollywood. Not only are Kings like Edward buried here, but so are famous writers, poets, politicians, or at least there memory is preserved in a floor plaque, and they are all over this Abbey. What a different place this is than the Abbey in Bath which we will see later. This Abbey is... Read more
