Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Bright Idea by Zaldy Incaonapo (public domain image).
The principle of magickal visualization is to attract something into your life by investing it with emotional energy and the power of your Will. The more clearly you visualize something, the more effective you will be at bringing it into your life. The more you want it, or the more you focus on it, the more you will attract it.
How does this work? Well, the answer might actually be found in the field of science, as opposed to magick. At the quantum level, when you measure subatomic elements as particles, particles are what you get (protons, electrons, neutrons, etc.) But when you measure subatomic elements as waves of energy, waves are what you get! In other words, your expectations determine the nature of physical reality. The wider implications for the Witch are awe-inspiring. What this tells us is that the basic building blocks of reality are fundamentally dependent upon our perceptions and expectations!

Onesight
In this exercise you will learn how to visualize one given thing with complete recall, using as many different sensory aspects as you can. This exercise, practiced regularly, will teach you how to rediscover the power to absorb the fine details of things instead of just focusing on what your mind currently believes to be the “most relevant” information.

Pick an item such as a large piece of fruit, or maybe a small statue, a piece of art; something three dimensional that has texture and scent. Put it on the table in front of you with no other distractions. Get a piece of something to write with. Get something to cover the item when you’re done with it. You will also need a stopwatch or someone to keep an eye on the clock for you.
Set the timer for one full minute, examine the item as thoroughly as you can. Look at it, touch it, smell it, taste it, handle it. Do whatever you need to do to appreciate each detail of the item with all five senses.
After one full minute, cover over the item and write or type out every detail you can remember about your selected item. No peeking!
When you have exhausted every element you can possibly think of, uncover it and study it again. Was there anything that you missed?
I find that when people start doing this exercise, one of two things happens. Either they notice only the obvious things (i.e. the orange is orange,) or they notice only the things that stand out, and miss the obvious things! (i.e. the orange has a blemish near the top of it and they notice that, but it never occurs to them that the orange is orange!) Take note of which one seems to be true for you, because it tells you how you look at the world. Are you missing the fine details of things and only noticing common things? Or is the reverse true; are you “missing the forest for the trees?” In order to completely “visualize” something, you have to be able to consider both of these aspects.
Try to do this exercise at least once a week, and work on the aspect in which you are weakest.
