You probably don’t need me to tell you this, but Jesus really understands how people think and act. Commenting on the people of his time, the following words still hold true today:

“Then to what shall I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a dirge, but you did not weep.’ For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine, and you said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’” (Luke 7:31-34)

Because he doesn’t eat and drink like everyone else, John the Baptist is viewed as a demon-possessed lunatic. Jesus, on the other hand, is viewed as a drunkard and glutton because he does eat and drink with the people. Both of these men are doing God’s will, but are criticized by those who are self-righteous. Guess what? If you try to live your life according to God’s will, you will also be criticized. Don’t let it bother you. You’re in good company!

Let’s pray together…

Holy Spirit, Sometimes it’s hard to be a Christian. People always seem to be second guessing my motives and finding fault with my behavior. Even though I’m just trying to do what’s right, I end up getting accused of being judgmental or intolerant. I know that you were sent to help me stay the course and do the right thing, especially when it seems like everyone is against me. Help me, Holy Spirit. Guide me as you guided Jesus. Allow me to ignore those who criticize me unjustly. Help me to persevere when I feel like throwing in the towel. Thank you for dwelling in me and giving me strength. Amen.
