God Or Money?
Working in full time ministry, I don’t have a lot of money. Not even close. Even though we live very modestly, it’s often tough to pay the bills. The Lord has definitely provided for us, but we’ve had a few close calls. Now, here’s a confession. I love my job, but I sometimes wish we had more money. Not just a little bit, but lots and lots of money. There are times when I dream about about how much easier life would be if we had tons of money in the bank. But then I remember what Jesus said and I wake up…
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 6:24)
His words are pretty frightening. If I love money, then I will despise God. Period. There is no middle ground. And here’s what really scares me. You don’t have to be rich to love money. Poor people like me can love money too.
How Do I Know If I Love Money?
The Bible gives us the answer to this important question…
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Heb 13:5)
If you are content with what you have, you don’t love money. Simple, isn’t it?
It Only Makes Sense
Practically speaking, putting our faith in money is a big mistake. No matter how much money you have, it can all be gone tomorrow. Just like that! On the other hand, putting our faith in God is a great move. He promised that he will never leave or forsake us and he doesn’t lie.
It doesn’t get more secure than that.
