Why Doesn’t God Answer Me?

Sooner or later, every person who prays will ask this question. I have asked it many times and will do so in the future. The important thing to keep in mind, however, is that there is a right way and a wrong way to pose this question. If you ask properly, it will bring you great peace and draw you closer to the Lord. If you ask it incorrectly, it’s just going to make you miserable. Let’s take a closer look…

It’s Been Asked Before

The question of “Why doesn’t God answer me?” appears several times in the Book of Psalms. Here is the most famous passage:

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why so far from my call for help, from my cries of anguish? My God, I call by day, but you do not answer; by night, but I have no relief. (Psalm 22:2-3)

Not only only does this appear in the Old Testament, but it was exclaimed by Jesus as he suffered on the cross. The fact that Jesus repeated these words pretty much tells you that this is the correct way to ask the question, but do you know why?

I’ll give you a hint. To whom is the question addressed?

Talk To God!

If you want to know why God isn’t answering you, ask him! We often make the mistake of turning this into a rhetorical question or address it to everyone except the Lord. Why? When God is silent (as he sometimes is), complaining to others won’t help you get answers. Address the question to him and keep asking. Job wrestled with this question, but he kept complaining to God. It took a long time, but he eventually got his answer. Don’t give up. God will answer you when the time is right.
