The Moon…what’s yours called?

Each monthly moon has a name and these are different in each culture, region, country, faith or religion – many, many different names but usually they refer to the season, the weather or what the people are up to at that time of the year.

If you would like to work with names for each month then find a set that suits you, perhaps link it to your area or the particular pathway that you follow, for instance the Native Americans have several different sets of names depending on tribe or the Japanese have beautiful moon names and the Celtic culture has its own set of names too.

I prefer to work with names that suit where I live so although they are lovely I don’t work with American moon names because they don’t all fit with me living in the UK so I tend to work with more Celtic/folk lore names.

If you don’t like any that you find what about making up your own names to suit your area and seasons?

Here are some that I know of but there are more, you will also find that different cultures might have similar or the same moon names but they are transposed or shifted by a month or two – it all depends on the seasons and where you are in the world.

January – Wolf Moon, Quiet Moon, Snow Moon, Cold Moon, Chaste Moon, Disting Moon and Moon of Little Winter.

February – Ice Moon, Storm Moon, Horning Moon, Hunger Moon, Wild Moon, Red and Cleansing Moon, Quickening Moon, Solmonath and Big Winter Moon.

March – Storm Moon, Seed Moon, Moon of Winds, Death Moon, Plow Moon, Worm Mon, Herthmonath, Lentzinmanoth, Lenting Moon, Sap Moon, Crow Moon and Moon of the Snowblind.

April – Growing Moon, Hare Moon, Seed or planting Moon, Planters Moon, and Budding trees Moon, Eastermonath, Ostarmanoth, Pink Mon, Green Grass Moon.

May – Hare Moon, Merry or Dyad Moon, Flower Moon, Frogs Return Moon, Thrilmilcmonath, Sproutkale, Winnemanoth, Planting Moon and Moon when the ponies shed.

June – Mead Moon, Moon of Horses, Lovers Moon, Strong Sun Moon, Honey Moon, Aerra Litha, Brachmanoth, Strawberry Moon, Rose Moon and Moon of Making Fat

July – Hay Moon, Wort Moon, Moon of Claiming, Moon of Blood, Blessing Moon, Maedmonat, Hewimanoth, Fallow Moon, Buck Moon, Mead Moon and Thunder Moon.

August – Corn Moon, Barley Moon, Dispute Moon, Wedmonath, Harvest Moon and Moon when cherries turn black

September – Harvest Moon, Wine Moon, Singing Moon, Sturgeon Moon, Haligmonath, Witumanoth and Moon when deer paw the Earth.

October – Blood Moon, Harvest Moon, Hunters Moon, Shedding Moon, Winterfelleth, Windermanoth, Falling Leaf Moon, Ten Colds Moon and Moon of the changing seasons.

November – Snow Moon, Dark Moon, Fog Moon, Hunters Moon, Beaver Moon, Mourning Moon, Blotmanoth, Herbistmanoth, Mad Moon, Moon of Storms and Moon when deer shed antlers.

December – Cold Moon, Oak Moon, Wolf Moon, Snow Moon, Moon of long nights, Long Nights Moon, Aerra Geola, Wintermonat, Heilagmanoth, Big Winter Moon and Moon of popping trees.
