Why We Need The Silence In Between

I am writing this on a rainy day when I can’t seem to force myself to do what I planned to do. Although I’m feeling a bit guilty about it, I can sense that I would also feel a little guilty if I simply let the day pass by the way it always did.

There is something about today’s rainy weather that invites me to pause, to rest, to simply bask in the silence of it all. Of course it isn’t really silent because I can still hear the rain pouring outside. But I guess that’s how nature often sounds like. Although you hear it, the effect that it produces helps to silence the mind from anxious thoughts. It is similar to the relaxing sound of the waves on a beach. That, too, can help lull me to sleep.

God has known from the start what we needed. He knew that every now and then, we needed to take a pause. We need to have that silence in between.

God Himself rested on the seventh day. And after He completed His work, He took time to appreciate the beauty of it all.

“God looked at everything he had made, and found it very good.” – Genesis 1:31 (NABRE)

We, too, are called to take this time to rest. We must allow ourselves time to appreciate everything that we have ever done and to give thanks to God for all the blessings He has bestowed upon us.

There is a time for work. But there is also a time for rest. There is a time for that beautiful silence in between.

Appreciate your journey and see how far you have come. Notice the beauty of nature around you. Get in touch again with the people that God has given you.

Be present. Breathe. Let go of your anxieties.

I think that this is one thing that the world is badly in need of right now. Have you noticed how the people today consume online content? Even the videos we watch seem to get shorter and shorter. The same is true with music. When we watch short clips, we only get to hear a part of a song’s melody. Then we proceed to the next one without a pause.

Let us remember that even the best songs have rests between the notes. Without them, only noise would exist.

Beauty isn’t meant to just pass us by. It is meant to be appreciated, digested and remembered. Only then can it remain a part of us.

If you have already fulfilled your duties, and you feel inclined to rest a moment, why not do so?

Our moments of rest can be just as important as our many hours of work. They help us recharge, they give us time to heal and they allow us to breathe in whatever is good and beautiful so that these things may forever be with us.

Appreciate the silence. Thank God for moments of rest. Sometimes, we all need that precious silence in between.

“God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation.” – Genesis 2:3 (NABRE)

A Time for Rest

There is a time for work,
and a time for play;
a time for night,
and a time for day.

There is a time to sow
and a time to reap;
a time to rejoice,
after a time to weep.

There is a time for growing
and a time for healing;
a time to ask,
and a time to receive.

We all need a time to see
the good things God has made;
a time to simply rest
in God’s sweet embrace.
