What Happens To a World Without Truth

You may have heard someone say, “Leave me alone. Don’t impose your truth on me.” In today’s relativistic world, subjective truth is gradually becoming the norm.

“I have my truth and you have yours,” some people say. But what does it mean? Why call it truth at all when it can change depending on our whims and desires?

Isn’t truth a reality we must all share and live in?

What happens when the truth can no longer be found?

1. We can no longer distinguish right and wrong

Without truth, no one can objectively say something is right or wrong. Everything becomes subjective and dependent upon our personal views.

Is it wrong to steal? Is it right to manipulate other people? Who decides which actions are evil and which actions are good?

2. We will have no direction but our inclinations

Our personal as well as the world’s purpose will dramatically change course. No longer would our goals coincide with the greater good because everyone will be driven by their own feelings.

“I feel like doing this today.” We’d probably hear more and more people say that. And it won’t matter whether you’re in the middle of an important project at work or you’re raising a family. It won’t even matter if you’re in the government and responsible for the whole country.

If no one can tell you the objective reality and all you listen to is the voice inside your head, what would stop you from always following your fleeting emotions and desires?

3. The voice of reason would give way to the voice of chaos

When there is a common perception of reality, there is a way to talk, think, and agree towards a common goal. Even if we may sometimes argue before we can work things out, there is still an opportunity for harmony and peace.

But if we totally eradicate the voice of truth, we’d also extinguish the voice of reason. And when we do, how do we ever achieve order in this world?

4. Justice will be no more

How many times have you wanted to achieve fairness and justice? In times when someone hurts you or those you love, you want justice and reparation for those responsible for the harm.

But what if there is no more truth to shed light on your case? What if the offender disagrees with your point of view?

In a world without truth, justice would be a sham and the powerless would fall prey to the powerful.

5. Life would lose its very meaning

It is inherent in our humanity to desire a meaningful life. In that kind of life, there is purpose, order, beauty, harmony and every opportunity for good. While we may not live in a perfect world, we can strive to make it better. Even if we don’t always reach what is ideal, we can work to come closer to it each day.

But if we remove truth, we also remove everything else that makes this world wonderful. Life would lose its beauty and meaning. All that would be left is an empty place in our hearts where truth used to reside.

6. It would be a dark and lonely world

Without truth to light the way, it would be a dark world indeed. Ruled by chaos and momentary pleasures, it cannot rise higher to where true happiness can be found.

Preferring to always follow only ourselves, we’d also destroy our relationships. And once we do, all that awaits us is a cold and boring life in a prison we have made for ourselves.

A World Without Truth Is a World Without God

For some people today, having God in one’s life may not be important. But whether we realize it or not, God is the source of all that is good and that gives meaning to our lives.

To choose otherwise is to choose what we can only call as “hell”, that place of darkness where we forever refuse light, truth and life.

For Christians, truth is not only a matter of knowledge. Truth is a Person who came to us, died on the cross and lived again so that we could have everlasting life.

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6, NRSVCE)

He is not only the truth. He is also the way and the life. And if we choose to eliminate truth from our lives, it is Christ Himself we are refusing. Hence, along with the truth, we also choose to lose our way. We choose destruction rather than life.

Let us do what we can to choose and uphold the truth while it may be found. In truth, there is harmony, order, justice, peace, hope and life. It is only in truth where we can find life and the kind of meaningful joy we have all been searching for.

“We are building a dictatorship of relativism that does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate goal consists solely of one’s own ego and desires. We, however, have a different goal: the Son of God, the true man. He is the measure of true humanism.

We must develop an adult faith. An ‘adult’ faith is not a faith that follows the trends of fashion and the latest novelty; a mature adult faith is deeply rooted in friendship with Christ. It is this friendship that opens us up to all that is good and gives us a criterion by which to distinguish the true from the false, and deceit from truth. We must develop this adult faith; we must guide the flock of Christ to this faith. And it is this faith – only faith – that creates unity and is fulfilled in love.”

-Pope Benedict XVI

“We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.” – Ephesians 4:14-16 (NRSVCE)
