What if aliens suddenly revealed themselves to us? How prepared are we for a truth so shocking it could shake the very foundations of our faith?
A Life-Changing Event
Discovering the existence of intelligent life on other planets is a life-changing event. It isn’t like watching a movie we can simply walk away from and forget. And it isn’t like finding trivial information that can’t affect the rest of our lives.
If the government tells us that aliens do exist and they have known it for quite a while, we’d be forced to ask the difficult questions:
Who are these aliens?
Are they good or bad?
What are their intentions for coming here?
When it comes to our faith, we may ask:
Do these aliens believe in God?
What is God’s plan for them?
How are they different from us when it comes to salvation?
While some Christians assume that discovering aliens would present no challenges to their faith, other people may feel so much at a lost that they could doubt the existence of God.
A Difficult Question
Amid all these, perhaps the more difficult question would be, “Why didn’t God prepare us for this?”
If God is All-Knowing and He knew that we would have this life-changing encounter, why didn’t He send His prophets beforehand to warn us?
It is true that God has no obligation to tell us everything. God is God. He can withhold the knowledge of something significant in accordance with His wisdom.
But while we cannot limit or oblige God in any way, we can wonder why He did not work the same way throughout history.
God’s Way of Working Through Time
This is how God revealed Himself to us. Through His encounters with the prophets, the Israelites, and the early Christians, we have come to know that He does not act randomly or out of character.
When God acts, there is a reason. When God reveals something, He reveals it at the right time. And before God allows us to experience something huge, He prepares the way.
He did not randomly send Jesus at any point in history. He prepared the Israelites first and announced His coming long before the angel Gabriel announced the joyful news to Mary.
Before the time of the Gentiles, they were already included in God’s plan of salvation. Abraham was told that through him, all the nations of the earth would be blessed. Jesus preached that He has other sheep. Peter had a vision that allowed him to realize the mission of salvation for all people.
If the preaching to the Gentiles is such a significant matter that needed prior preparation, how much more would be an encounter with an alien race?
Are Aliens Mentioned in the Bible?
Some people say that there are hints in these Bible verses about the existence of aliens:
“When the living creatures moved, the wheels moved with them; and when the living creatures were raised from the ground, the wheels also were raised. Wherever the spirit would go, they went. And they were raised up together with the living creatures, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.” – Ezekiel 1:19-20 (NABRE)
However, such an assumption is vague and inconsistent with a sound interpretation of Bible verses that are apocalyptic and uses figures of speech to present spiritual facts.
Another Bible verse being misinterpreted is this:
“The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went in to the daughters of humans, who bore children to them. These were the heroes that were of old, warriors of renown.” – Genesis 6:4 (NRSVCE)
There were two common interpretations for this:
Sons of God could have meant those who follow God, particularly the descendants of Seth. In these verses, they intermarried with the descendants of Cain.
The other interpretation is that these refer to fallen angelic beings.
These do not in any way refer to aliens from other planets. Otherwise, it would have been too big a fact to not explain later on. We must remember that God is just beginning to reveal Himself and His plan of salvation for humanity.
Other than some remote interpretations like these, the Bible does not explicitly communicate anything about the existence of aliens.
Too Significant to Be Left Out
There is no mention of aliens in Genesis, even though angels (intelligent spiritual beings) are mentioned many times. Revelation also makes no mention of them, even though it describes various scenarios leading to the end of time. Even in the commissioning of the disciples to preach the Good News, no mention was ever made about preaching to other worlds or beings.
“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:28-20 (NABRE)
When Jesus prophesied about the end of the world, He told His disciples that the gospel would be preached throughout the world only, not throughout the universe.
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.” – Matthew 24:14 (NABRE)
Aliens and Our Salvation
The Bible never directly mentions aliens. The apostles also did not teach the Church about them. Catholic saints never mentioned them either.
It would be shocking if we suddenly encountered aliens who have not even been mentioned in God’s plan of salvation throughout our history.
It is not that everything should be in the Bible. The discovery of new galaxies, for instance, need not be there because that would only add to the wonders of God’s creation. However, the existence of intelligent alien life is a different matter because it can affect our views about God’s salvation.
Does this mean that there can be no aliens?
What we can be certain of is that God acts with wisdom, truth and love. His ways include a pattern of giving His promises, preparing us for them and then fulfilling them.
The Great Deception
While we cannot know for certain God’s will and His hidden mysteries, we must be very cautious about claims of intelligent alien life.
Investigate the evidence thoroughly, analyze the intentions of those involved and never lose faith in God, the Creator of the universe, and Lord of all things seen and unseen.
At the end of time, false prophets would abound. But we need not be ensnared if we continue to hold on to the Truth.
If any person, alien or spiritual entity, tries to contradict the Bible or the traditions and teachings handed down to the Church in exchange for technologies promising to solve global problems, let us cling all the more to the revelation of God throughout history.
“But even if an angel from heaven or we should preach [to you] a gospel other than the one that we preached to you, let that one be accursed! As we have said before, and now I say again, if anyone preaches to you a gospel other than the one that you received, let that one be accursed!” – Galatians 1:8-9 (NABRE)
God has revealed Himself to us through time by the wonder of His works, the wisdom of His instructions and the persistence of His love. He revealed the fullness of His grace and truth when His only begotten Son became flesh and dwelt among us. Ours is a faith supported by the veracity of proofs and the testimony of witnesses who shed their blood for our salvation. Even today, the Holy Spirit guides the Church in its pilgrimage until we reach our heavenly home. God has equipped us with everything we need to stand firm in our faith.
Let no new discovery or any display of wonder take our faith away.
“Then I saw another beast that rose out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. It exercises all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and it makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound had been healed. It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of all; and by the signs that it is allowed to perform on behalf of the beast, it deceives the inhabitants of earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that had been wounded by the sword and yet lived…” – Revelation 13:11-14 (NRSVCE)
“Before Christ’s second coming, the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the “mystery of iniquity” in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.” (CCC 675)
